Boys weekend

Dullstroom?
Hikes/walks, fishing.
I have heard this place is great. It is really not far from Jozi and surprisingly we never visited.

If you visited, any accommodation recommendations ? Will check usual sites anyways. Thanks.

hire an armoured car and do a game drive through the Cape Flats, early morning and late evening are the best

Dunkeld Country Estate
Walkersons Hotel

But also just check the usual sites and associated reviews
If you like whisky, check out Wild About Whisky. Not a venue for the sons, but you could get yourself a rare bottle there.

Look these things only you can really say what your family would like; for a long weekend I might still do Durban but only if I could leave the Thursday and even then that last day becomes tricky - ideally you want to leave early to avoid queues heading out but then you lose that day. So get there Thursday late even, and you've got Friday and Saturday, leave early Sunday. Definitely doable especially with kids at that age, they're old enough to keep themselves busy.
And then there'll be plenty there to keep you guys happy.
Sun City or even WarmBaths, they're nice cos the 14 year old especially can do their own thing for a bit; he's probably getting to that age where he wants to do some stuff on his own. Plus both within like 2 1/2 hours away.
But I mean 5 hours from JHB puts you in many places in SA, heck, you can get to Kruger in that time or places like Graskop, do the whole God's Window, Bourke's Luck Potholes scene. I'd almost say for that period a long weekend is too short though - too much to do but you could pick what looks cool.

Plenty options I reckon.

I haven't gone through all the replies so I don't know if this has been mentioned. What about Sabie? Seeing God's Window is something everyone needs to do at least once in their lives, and it's not far from Sabie. There are plenty of other hiking trails around there.

Honestly, I would never do Durban on 3 day weekend as I consider 3 days is too short for Durban trip. Rather do Sun city or Dullstroom or something within 3 hour driving distance.

Do you have to vacate the house as a spousal request or persoanl preference? It'll likely still be too cold for many of the outdoor activities. Why not pick a project and do something at home with them? Build a storage chest, or if you want something longer term get a go-cart to restore and race afterwards. This way they learn skills whilst spending time with their dad. Those are the times I cherish most.
