Breakfast Alternatives

Hi

Looking for some healthy and easy breakfast alternatives to the normal yoghurt/muesli/cereal/bacon/eggs.

Anyone have this: http://m.allrecipes.com/recipe/230642/healthy-green-juice
The overall idea seems good. Just off the top of my head though - Kale carries kidney stone risk and I'm not going anywhere near something know to do that. Also go easy on the cucumber...messes up the taste fast.

I'd keep the idea but mix the recipe up a bit. e.g. Banana + yoghurt usually makes for a good base. It breaks your "green" theme sure but nutrition isn't a fashion show.

I don't have a juicer...those things are stupidly expensive. Blenders are easier to acquire.

Chia seeds soaked in nutmilk (or regular milk too I guess or whatever milk you use) with cinnamon and blueberries, thought I usually add vanilla powder and a good cocoa powder as well. I also quite like oats soaked overnight in milk with added blueberries and cinnamon the next morning - eaten cold. Fruit salad.

Woolworths
huh? Haven't seen it tbh. How is it packaged?

For the first two sips that juice is ok, then its just yucky! i cannot eat cucumber because of that juice. Though we used spinach instead of kale.
Yeah. Generally anything green you need to be a little careful not to mess up the taste.

I'd also suggest adding something carbs to it...like oats soaked in milk maybe. A breakfast without at least some nice low GI carbs makes for a seriously bad day in my experience.

I have never tried oats soaked in milk, do you just buy jungle oats?

Also those chia seeds sound cool, do you just eat a bowl of seeds?

I have never liked smoothies eg with fruit and yoghurt.

Yep. Rolled oats. NB this assumes you're using a blender. I'd imagine you'll have a rough time with oats + juicer.

hmmm...well maybe throw in some kind of tea angle then. I've had decent luck with a green tea + rooibos + honey + spearmint + lemon lately. Works well as a iced tea type thing, but I'd imagine you could use it for you're breakfast angle too.

Oh I thought you just put oats in a bowl with milk, wait a while and then eat. :o

I am using a blender.

I think I will try the green juice stuff as I have never had it before and definitely some oats in some shape or form.

Is the cereal FutureLife good? I love it.

As I said I don't have a 8k juicer but as far as I can tell the recipes do seem to differ quite a bit from blender recipes. So just keep an eye on that.

Go for it. I'd suggest trying the original green first - just because you've set your sights on it & its better to get a verdict than let it hang. I'd advise against oats + green...they're both kinda bland. I was thinking more oats in a yoghurt+ banana context.

People don't experiment enough with food though. If the experiment goes sideways...I've got a 24/7 fastfood place near by. I'll survive.

I don't do cereal tbh, but on the whole anything with a fancy name is bad news imo. I've bought expensive cereal and then it turns out to be some shty powdery stuff and/or has rock hard bits. Check through my Honey thread...some regular who's name I don't recall posted wicked DIY muesli info there. I don't create many threads so i'm sure you'll find it.

So our resident teddy bear has inspired me to venture into blender territory once more.

Initial testing results:
Cucumber: Avoid like the plague - just no...evil sharp/bitter taste.
Baby spinach leaves work better than expected
Oats work well...you can easily add 1/2 cup of oats...does yield a slightly powdery / floury taste though so it needs something like pineapple to overpower it.
Rooibos / green tea works well to dilute the smoothie a bit

Thinking of throwing some USN whey powder in there...but worried about taste though since I've only got choc flavour on hand.

I can totally see this becoming my breakfast replacement. Still need to find a way to make it more low GI...bit worried that my current mix will spike sugar levels & not carry through till lunch. Oats will help to this end but its not enough yet.

I tried that green juice. It just made a green sludge that didn't even strain. It tasted quite nice but I could not stomach the texture. I think one needs a juicer for that.

Chia seeds are awesome soaked in milk.

That green juice REALLY needs to be juiced and not blended. Even then the texture can be a bit difficult to stomach.

My staple breakfast:

1) 70g Woolworths Rolled Oats
2) 250ml 2% Milk
3) +/- 200ml Water, depending on what consistency you like. Sometimes I need to add more liquid during cooking. I like them runny.
4) 4-5 Cracked Large Cardamon Pods.
5) Ground Cinnamon to taste.

Throw it all in. Bring to a slow boil. Add oats. 5-6 min. Remove. Add half a teaspoon of butter, plus sugar or sweetener to taste. Stir. Boom.
