Well, its been a month and a half and still no Telkom to install a line for ADSL at my new flat. All I have heard is that they will be there in April 2009.

Anways, on Friday on my way from work I saw a Telkom technician outside my complex. I stopped my car in the middle of the road, put my hazards on and ran over to him to pour my heart out. Next thing I know im offering him money together with my reference number just to sought this out. :D

This is what its come to....lol

Maybe he gets it right.

Anyone else ever done this:o

Ummm no comment
Sad that in order to get what we deserve we have to bribe someone. It is not even to do anything illegal. We have to bribe people just to do what they are paid to do in the first place.

so you gave him money and still didn't get your line ....... if I was gonna bribe the buggers, I'd make sure it was for sorting out my line immediately. What if he just took your money and laughed as he drove away (the likely scenario)

I wouldn’t blame the technician. He arrives at the office in the morning and has a list of orders he needs to fulfil. He goes out, does his job and that’s that. It’s the idiotic call centre who can’t give me an answer as to why the order will only be serviced in April 2009.

I guess I’m just trying to buy a way into Telkom since I don’t know anyone who works there and he will look into it even though it isnt his job.

or at least only pay half the bribe as a "deposit" :D

I didn't even ask... and a techie came out on a Sunday with no authorisation to get into the pipes and connected my ADSL... :D

haha...Haven't given him anything yet. I offered him money if he sorts it out..Come on..I'm Greek. A natural business man;):p

That is the way you do business in Africa. Sad very, very sad

bribary ftw! especially if u bribe and dont pay, bribed, the briber ftw.

i dont care who i bribe to get something done or something....its kept me out the chookie a few times. i'd rather pay a 500 buck bribe than a 2000 buck speeding ticket.
this country is so corrupt, that you can actually take advantage of it.

btw, i think its actually wierd how they cant make it to all the adsl customers for instalations. When a client needs adsl or isdn lines installed fpr a big conference meeting in some building. then all of a sudden they can make it to the exact day the client wants them to install. and i have met the guy that does them. and he did'nt look like he was up to his neck with instalations.
its only a matter of a techie going to switch you on at the exchange. wow so hard to do

i'd say the BEST thing in your situation, is find out where your exchange will be, and hang around there for awhile, there is technicians coming in and out of there the whole day, i'm sure one will switch you up for a something.

It's not just the country that's corrupt, it's clearly you (and people like you) that feed the corruption. I wouldn't brag about this - I'd be too ashamed to admit it.

There's a saying - "People who sleep with dogs shouldn't complain when they wake up covered in fleas!".

I emailed a telkom supervisor and got prompt service. This was couple years back.
There was a list going around on whose in charge for what are etc

aaah blow me,, everyone knows how telkom have been treating the south african,,, i'd friggen pay that technician 5000 rand if i had it,

getting a technician to take 10 minutes of his time is nothing. you ask him if he will or not, whats wrong with that. he either does or does'nt.

Maybe you the person who cant ask for a favour, or would'nt help someone out when you can clearly see the dude needs help.
you the kind of guy who will let your own brother sit in the chookie and not help out with his bail. Cause you would think its the right thing to do and teach him a lesson.
next time dont rub your wife's back just to get a piece of the action.. just lie there and wait.... and see how many times you get around to it.just cause you think u have to bribe her into having something with you..infact, dont do anything for anybody ever again, and see how hard life could be with out having someone to help you out now and then.

yo man, any chance you could pm me with details to how i can get hold of that list?

wHiTe*LiGhTnInG, news alert buddy: corruption's bad. I agree at this point in time in South Africa it's difficult to go without it, just last week I bribed a metro cop; but you're justifying it as if it's a good thing. It isn't, nor would be bailing out ur friend for a crime they must pay, or fighting an innocent person because ur friend decides to get into a fight with them for no reason. But it happens. It isn't right, loss the 'blow me' attitude. Typical south african attitude of accepting the pits of lifestyle thinking you cant make a change. If everyone thought like you do, the world would get nowhere.

nah good guys need a break now and again,,, i know its wrong to do bad things. and you guys are looking at the big things.

these are small stupid little things people are doing. get a oke to sort your connection out, and slip a 50, wow big deal..i'm not gonna turn into a big con man and take over everyone money one day in the bank and turn all bad.

stealing money that is supposed to be for something else and pocket it for urself,, thats corruption.

asking someone to help you out is'nt, wth are you all talking about.
you telling me if you go to the garage and tell the dude thats fixing ur car if he just cant do your car first cause cause you got so much stuff to do and you really been waiting awhile now and need that extra time. even if you willing to pay extra or even if you tell the dude you buy him KFC for lunch, if he can skip a few cars and start on yours.
So nobody is allowed to do this, you corrupt if you are....lol.....what a load of nonsence.
i better watch out for asking favours, they might just think i'm corrupt..

It is sad that this is how to get business done in this country.

But if I need things done, I wouldn't care whether its considered corruption or not.

I have a technician's cellphone number that I only call when I have problems. I haven't been through 10212 in AGES! He comes to the house on the same day I call him sorts my line out (due to lightning, water etc..) and I tip him necessarily..

Saves me the time of waiting 20 minutes waiting for an operator and then only a week later a techi rocks up....

Not really sure how bribing a telkom man to do what telkom should be doing is bribery but i can tell you have wasted your money as there is no adsl in your area til april 2009, so unless you gave him enough to put some ports in your area its all just a waste and money.

Next time make sure telkom have adsl in your area before moving :p
