Broadband Conference: Your feedback needed

Hi folks

I have another meeting regarding a broadband conference tomorrow, and it will be great if you can give an indication whether you will be interested in a conference of this nature. The focus will fall on current and future broadband services in South Africa, including technical issues regarding these services, rollout plans, growth etc. The aim of this conference is purely a serve to you guys, so your feedback is what we are interested in.

If you would be interested in such a conference/seminar/discussion it will be great if you can post what you will be interested in (which topics) and which day (Friday/Saturday) will suit you. If not, a ‘No’ will be great. This is definitely not any form of commitment, but rather just feedback to assist us to prepare for such an event.

dont know what assistance i can offer but yes i would be interested.
 
I would be interested and will attend if its a friday. May be a good time to thrash out some goals for myadsl. Sorry I am quite goal oreintated and would prefer to have a few so as to use the collective muscle effectively. I think Debbie2 raised the same issue a while ago somewhere here. If we can show that myadsl can focus and direct the spear we can become even more of a pain in who evers ass. I know that this is being done by some members but it needs clarification...(for me at least.... maybe I am just slow).

Maybe not the ideal conference item but then again what in telecoms in SA is?

I would like to discuss:

> Ways of engaging government on accelerating competition

> Actively communicating with Telkom on the benefits of fast tracking broadband and always on internet services to the poorest of the poor. I would like to see Telkom providing connectivity at a close to cost price with more focus from their side on developing local content with which they can make money.

> What happened to the number portability discussion earlier? If this can be fast tracked, we will see better competition between the different mobile and fixed line markets.

> We need to see if we cannot become the de facto facilitator of industry chiefs in order to further open duscussions on future developments in the SA telecoms industry. We obviously have an interest in seeing better service at better prices realise...

Methinks a Broadband Conference would be great, likewise about needing extended advance warning in order to plan my time & actually attend.

I'd like VoIP to feature prominently at some point, not talking about Skype - I'm referring to VoIP that businesses can run with, and the implications due to the hugely inflated overall/total price of broadband bandwidth & the extremely low cap on ADSL...
 
whateva happens, dont get 15 old bald ppl to walk up to the stage and talk about whats wrong with south africa internet, because we get enuf of that on this forum.

get ppl to also tell us how to solve these issues in a resonable manner, so at least we know we're not just blind supporters complaining about the state of the communications industry, with no compassion to try and solve the problems.

Hi IC

There is a VOIP conference coming up in late July with various knowledgeable speakers. The lineup includes: Maiendra Moodley (CSSA), Alan Levin (ISOC), William Stucke (AfrISPA), Clayton Hayward and others (OpenVoice). There will also be a panel discussion on broadband (Panel members include Steve Lewis (Telkom), Zolisa Masiza (ICASA), Devan Naidoo (DoC) and RPM :D). The conference is unfortunately on the expensive side (about R 10k), but I can might be able to get permission to publish a few of these presentations. If there is a great presentation I will also ask for it to be delivered at our conference.

Hi Gladiator

Thanks for the feedback. I am personally getting a bit thin at the top, but I can assure you that the conference I have in mind is very different to what you have described :) I want to get industry players to discuss their current technologies, their future plans, obstacles, solutions etc.

After the Vodacom presentation (with IC and myself) I knew that many of our members would have loved to be there and see what is going on, and take note of the companies’ future plans. The ‘meeting’ and Q&A were very friendly and the atmosphere was one of information sharing rather than confrontation. A ‘conference’ will give everybody a chance to see what these companies are doing and give an opportunity for open information sharing regarding broadband services in SA.

This conference might therefore include issues like BW costs, SAT 3 access etc (depending on what the speaker’s agenda), but we will do our best to keep it as friendly and informative as possible.
