hmmm, 300kb/s still comes down to roughly 24GB's per day, if you watch the whole day long, unless of course you are only allowed to watch egoli and the news :)

This is absolutely a preemptive strike, can't tell me they made this decision without a bit of a nudge from Telkom Media :D ... but all the same it's great to see Multichoice sparking a bit.

Unless my math is way off its more like 3gb so there's your cap gone in a day unless you're on IS - then you get 10. :o
 
This is a cute little demonstration that is completely irrelevent in South Africa's current situation.

If local becomes uncapped by November as Telkom "promises" then caps shouldn't be a problem on this service?
 
Yeah, Lets hold thumbs and hope for the best that ICASA can start mandating the ECA on Telkom Scum ... slime . Then AT LEAST local content will be free4all, and streaming media can be stimulated.
 
Surely this is a non starter on our lightning fast 386k lines. Don't you need at least a 1mbit or 4mbit line for this to really stream smoothly? Or as usual am I missing something?

hahahahahaha seriously 300K encoding (i laugh it is mpeg 2 like (old tech) DSTV coz that will be even worse, if they actually get it to mpeg 4 (H264 2 big thumbs up) then it will be a better format than their DSTV satellite broadcast but look crap because of the 300K bitrate).

Think most people should rather stick to watching Youtube or Google video. At least that way you get to watch something worth your time. I still can't get over how crap that is, 300K, maybe they are expecting people to watch it on their cellphones. Thats it, its prob not for computers at all.

They may even find it hard to impress the good old boys like Jan van Riebeeck, who never new what a PC or internet was, with stuff like that .

However, that is not bad as an extra service, to preview content and such. But to give it the hype and flash it is getting is quite funny. Its like our local broadband providers. They give you these fairly fast lines like the current 4 meg lines but then you get 384 (or less) speeds when browsing (because of shaping and crap service). Tell it like it is. I mean look at the quote above "delivers a good quality video". Compared to what??????? The first digital cameras to come out maybe???? anyone remember those :) People who don't know or understand the technical side of technology will expect "good quality video" because they read it, but they won't be getting it.

O well for someone who doesn't like moaning, I've moaned a lot here, sorry guys, but this was a bit funny, still it's a very small step in the right direction non the less.

Just realised another thing, how funny will it be if Telkom had to Shape this content i.e. make the speeds just slow enough that it can't keep its buffer and skips all the time.

Man, if you going to compete with Telkom, don't use their service to do it on. That will be interesting.

That happens a lot on Youtube videos as well, as many of you have probably experienced

This is so typical...

How about fixing the current issues like capping, shaping, packet loss, low speeds, availability, service delivery, support, etc..

We still don't even have a proper VoIP infrastructure yet!

I seriously don't think branching out and offering all these other products helps when the current environment sucks the way it does.

Telkom should not be allowed to get into media until they can prove that they can deliver on their current offerings.

Anyway, this doesn't mean much to me since i'll be emmigrating soon anyway! I can't wait to leave this place for good. Yeehaaaa!
 
just tried clicking on the check bandwidth link on the site. We have a 4MB diginet at work - dstv bandwidth checker tells me I'm on 100kbps and I need 700kbps!! I think its broke!
 
We can hardly play games without lag on dsl now,they want to stream dstv on it.I agree good luck.
