Broadband over Power Lines gets a kick-start

The thought of entrusting my broadband access to eskom after the current debacle makes the mind boggle. :(

The though of the SNO backbone running on Eskom looks increasingly worrisome too.
 
This is just what i hear, but SNO using Transtel & Eskom is a common misconception, the SNO itself has been quietly laying down fibre in the background. Although i'm sure should the technology and regulation allow BPL they might engage Eskom and or the Muni's .
 
Stupid question - with the recent power cuts, does the power have to be runing through the cable to make it work?

Do you mean "does power have to flow in order for broadband to work?"

No, they operate at different frequencies.

It also would require that the circuit isn't broken, so I guess it wouldn't work if a circuit is tripped by a circuit breaker.

depends where you would like to be bashed :p kidding
yea it means high-speed internet access similar to adsl, but without using your phone line, instead using an ordinary power socket in your wall

Ethernet over Power has been available for some time and as far as i know u have to have power as the ethernet signal uses the power wave as a carrier i have used ethernet over power solutions in factories before and seems stable. I'll be interested to see how they deal with interferance tho if they plan on using it to carry broadband , faulty switches dirty isolators causing a leak to earth maybe it could work for long hauls but from home to home i see trouble.

That is why the Municipalities need to offer last mile, use BPL and Eskom's infrastructure but Wireless last mile or muni fibre :cool:

Cape Town needs to be up-to-date aswell, like Durban, Knysna and Pretoria

*Broadband over Power Lines * Ignorant as ever i have to wonder... does the city go to sleep and when it wakes the next day, residents are suddenly able to use this option? It is miraculously there with no real setup problems?
Surely it makes sense to Wonder about all the power cuts across SA recently? In every city and suburb and town and blamed on Eskom?
Surely the PTB will Have to shut down series to adjust them to carry this option?
I have to agree that there will be massive problems. Old existing equipment etc. But Ive no doubt a select few will get to enjoy the benefits while once again, the majority will do without or lose appliances left right and centre.
