Broadband performance - speed

I run vista on a lenovo laptop.
I have 4meg ADSL from Afrihost thru a Telkom line.
If I restart my laptop and connect to Afrihost I get top speed ( 1.5 to 2.5) using Gamco to measure the speed. After browsing for some minutes/hours the speed drops off dramatically, .35 to .5 using Gamco speed test.
I think something is getting into my operating system and causing the block.
Has anybody had the same or has anybody any ideas of what to do.

If you are comfortable, disable the virus scanner then do a speed test at Speedtest.net (Do a before and after). Some virus scanners can play havoc with speeds. In the days before I went Mac (and never looked back) I used Win XP and Kaspersky. The difference at Speedtest.net with Kaspersky on/off was significant.

Anyway just a thought.
