Broadband pricing comparison

While Telkom increased the usage limits for 2 GB and 3 GB subscribers to 3 GB and 5 GB respectively, the company said that its threshold capping procedure - where users were allowed to exceed their cap without losing international connectivity – will come to an end. This is bad news for ADSL users with a 1 GB Telkom account who in future will receive a higher overall bill without any additional benefits.
Gotta love Telkom's way with words.

Basically from now on Do1 subscribers get screwed with a 1GB hardcap and Do2 and Do3 get increased softcaps.

No Strobemeister, the Telkom Do Broadband prices in the article all include 2xR133 the line rental cost, e.g. for Do1: R330 = 2xR133 + R64 (wrong) ... R199 = R133 + R66 (correct).

Telkom Do Broadband

DO, do bee do wah...

They should be honest for once and change it from "Telkom Do Broadband" to "Telkom DOes SA", lube not supplied.

We all know that the other ISP are just mini-mes of Telkom... Neotel doesn't want to get into a price war with Telkom, oh shame, no balls hey? And I.K.A.K.A / Government have no political will to change the situation.

I think the wireless solutions should be as expensive as they are because the technology is new and the equipment and infrastructure is expensive... But the ADSL tech was supposed to provide a cheap alternative on existing copper infrastructure... Telkom are raping us. They will only lower their prices when there is a viable alternative to ADSL at a competitive price.

In Canada Dec 2006, I saw 5Mbps no-cap for $35. My uncle thought that that was a bit expensive. The difference was that there were 3 large operators competing for the business and no government protection.

Well done Telkom, you've managed to screw the country... you should all be proud.

I think a good follow-up article would be to show the percentage of subscribers for the 1GB, 3GB and 5GB packages per network. For example with Telkom ADSL packages:

1GB: 80%
3GB: 13%
5GB: 7%

This way we can see more clearly how prices are being manipulated based on the user base. Telkom subscribers to the 1GB package used to get 1.5GB, now they only get 1GB. An effective price increase of over 33% if you take into account the line rental increase as well. I'm sure most people in SA are on 1GB packages.

I might be missing something here but my understanding is that on Do1 Telscum charges R328.12 (less R28.07 as a discount of some sort), plus VAT, for Telephony Rental and TI.

So the R199 being bandied about seems to be more smoke and mirrors on Telscum's part.........

ag... wth... why are these morrons cleaning us out like that... This is day light robbery in the extreme... 0.375 Mbps , broadband get the F2@#!@#...

the revolution is coming people....

Wrongo

The Telkom line rental R133 is included in the Do1 broadband package, so that the total cost for a Telkom 1GB account with line rental is R199, not R330 as stated in the article. I should know, I have had Do1 for the almost a year. Either that or Telkom has undercharged me for several months, if so, sshhh.

The same with Do2 and Do3, line rental costs should be deducted from the costs mentioned in the article.

I don't know why they always get this wrong.

BTW I'm not a fan of Telkom, just pointing out some mistakes.

 Are you forgetting about Telkom phone line rental (not the ADSL line rental). And yes, you have to pay both line rentals in order to have ADSL, even if you dont use the phone (who is this age uses telkom phones except for older family members).

Telkom are actually the most expensive if you use a cost / price factor. One way or another Telkom get a piece of the cake from everything while the same is not true for the other companies.

Like a bully that have a TINY bit smaller plate of cake, but in the background force everyone to give him a slice of their cake.

Enable ALL companies to use the national network, build with taxpayers money, for free and the picture will change drastically.

Yes, telkom keeps splabbing about how the lines are costing them more than they make from it...

Simple numbnuts, give it to the people, since the taxpayer already paid for it.

There, just saved you billions over the next 10 years telkom.

No, I don't want the position now...give us the lines!!!

Can you really call 0.375 Mbps broadband?

And 5Gb? I use that in two weeks and only because I ration myself.

I'll only call it broadband when we have 1 Mb connections capped at, say, 30Gb for R500/month. My definition of broadband includes affordable, fast and high bandwidth.

Wow... all of this pricing is horrible for what limited access they give you. We have providers here in the United States trying to use broadband conditions in South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand as excuses to stick usage caps and jack prices up to pocket the profits.

Based on these kinds of prices, and the limited capacity caused by the lack of cheap connectivity to the rest of the global network, South Africa is at least 10 years behind North America.

That was when the first cable modem services started launching here, quickly followed by telephone companies getting rid of ISDN and moving into the first ADSL services.

Today, in western New York state, we pay about R400 for broadband at 20Mbps/1Mbps with no usage cap at all (for now). The local phone company offers "up to 10Mbps" ADSL service (it managed 3.1Mbps here) on promotion for R250 before taxes.

The big debate here is over deploying fiber optic service to the home to bring even faster speeds and bundle telephone, video, and broadband together, usually from the phone company (cable companies can already do that through coax).

I certainly hope South Africa can head more in our direction instead of our providers trying to head in yours. :-)
