Hi,

My brother was stabbed up pretty bad and his iPhone was stolen. He is still heavily medicated while he waits on surgery etc.

Herein lies the issue- he can't really communicate at the moment.

-Ive called MTN and blocked his SIM. MTN had to escalate the matter so his phone can be whitelisted??? And once that is done then they will blacklist the phone. (Had to give the IMEI number). Takes about 24 hours.

-The police won't open a case until he is off meds- so cannot get a case number.

-I cannot block his ABSA banking app without a case number.

-I cannot access the istore to 'find his iphone' or brick it. He gave me the incorrect password while on meds and I've blocked his account because of too many attempts. I tried to recover password but Apple now has to process something that takes another 12 hours.

-Ive got on his Gmail on his laptop and signed off from his phone.

Any àdvice?

Banking app should be rendered useless with a blocked Sim. Sounds like you've done all you can. For peace of mind perhaps go into a branch and report the matter. Speak to the branch manager. Speedy recovery for your brother and all the best!

The sim means nothing.

If he had an idiotic PIN code or none at all the phone is wide open to be used for anything.

Update

The guy who stole the phone is on Facebook Marketplace selling the i.phone- so we have his name and contact details now.

My brother wants to do a small sting- and arrange to meet him with a couple of buddies. He said that he is scared that if we report him to the cops- they will contact him and his profile will dissapear.

That seems like a terrible idea.

Meet up, stab him, take phone back.

Im in

meet up, and as soon as the phone is in your hands don't ever let it go.. you are the owner, of course your brother will have to be there. That "guy" can jump up and down and say you stole it to the crowd, but you'll of course have the IMEI number, receipts, police forms etc etc.. Do it in a crowded place like a shopping centre. Make a fuss, security arrives and all is good, you walk away with your phone. In the shopping centre meet as close as you can to the "building managers office" so you can all walk in with security when the fuss starts. Don't start swinging punches etc. If you can have a few friends around that's great, but don't try attack the guy, act like a buyer and you want to see if it all works etc, you must get it into your hand.. then your friends can walk up to you both.

But the owner of the phone must be there, not "im getting this phone back for my brother"

Banking app access can be revoked by logging onto the Absa website on your laptop and removing the iphone from trusted devices

hows the sting going? just be careful, these guys will try to rinse and repeat. take the buyers money, then run off with the phone a few times. probably not his first rodeo.

We decided to forward his details to the investigator.

My brother got admitted again due to the pain, so it's going to be on hold for now.

He has to retake his statement cz he was medicated during his initial statement.

Will post updates soon.

How do you know this is the person who stole the phone? He could easily be an innocent dupe who bought the phone from a fence.

My brother recognized him as the attacker. He got a good view of him.

This guy has the audacity to advertise the phone as 'password locked' and is selling his iPhone for R3000.
