Hey guys, i went through a pothole the other day (so pissed with myself) at around 60/70 and it was actually kinda deep, noticeable dip. Now the front right tyre (16 inch) has this "bruise" on the outer side from the rim to the tread, diameter of a R5 coin and maybe a rise of up to 1/2cm at its highest. I get some vibrations at higher speeds at around 100 and was already on the highway so didnt want to test my luck (bloem to jhb), so im guessing its off to an alignment and maybe a balance. The question is, can i simply swap the front to the back or do i need to buy a new tyre?

You need a new tyre - sorry :/

That little bubble has trippled your chance of a blowout and highly recommended you change it. It may last a week, a month or a year - but I wouldn't like to be around when it bursts

Alignment is probably out too - and a balance is needed if you replace the tyre

Oh - if you really can't buy a new tyre, I'd recommend swapping to a non-driven wheel :)

I would never in my life if I can choose where to get a blow out, have it on the rear of the car. With that tire being a ticking time bomb I won't suggest moving it to the back in any event. (Just my 2c)

So its safe to say that the tyre is a goner? Is there no way to like, knock it back into shape :D? Also since its only 1 tyre and the rest are relatively newish, it wont be necessary to change like a set pair (or 4 :( )? The other thing is, since the dip was sort of deep, how do i check for other damage like mechanics or steering to the affected area?

Edit: Its a Hankook Ventus S1 Evo, and i exaggerated a bit on the location, its more like dead center between the rim and the tread but still the size and shape of a R5.

Just check your oil sump. If that is fine then the rest of your steering and everything else should be fine. The Cast and Camber will be (Wheel alignment) will be shot though. You can't knock that bubble back it popped out sinse the support wires on the inside broke. That is why the bubble came out.

I would just replace the 2 front tyres. No need to buy 2 but if you can't get 2 now, just get 1.

However you should have a spare, just change the spare tyre on to your rim (unless you have a space saver tyre)

Any recommended places besides the usual TWT or Hi-Q in jhb randburg/fourways area? I suspect my wallet is about to be raped.

I've always thought it 'should' be on a wheel that is non driven wheel?

My stepfather had a rear wheel blow out on ab Audi at 140km/h and he said was very little feeling.

I've been lucky enough to never have so I'm not sure - but I've had the bump and you gotta change ;)

Mystic - 16" are probably the most expensive diametre because they're not as common ... So like Pitbull says, you're going to be in for a shock!

I smacked a pothole 3 months ago and the cheapest I found was actually Supa Quick Randpark Ridge. I work in Paulshof and live in Randburg - so tried everyone that you're probably going to phone ;)

If I remember correctly, the last 16" I bought was 3 years back at R1,800.00 per tyre

Are 16" that expensive??

R800? per tyre?

I dont need the top of the range tyres just something from a known brand and safe.

My new car has 16" :(

Closer to R1,800 per tyre as I said ;)

Unless you do Hancook or something. The 'brands' will cost.

You'll notice when they do mag/tyre specials, its usually 15, 17 and 18

Same happened to me.

I just moved the tire to the back if a blow out may happen, according to me is not that serious, i drove about 25 000km with that tire.

But its my 2c anyway, maybe i am careless like that, but didn't want to fork out the cash for an 18" at that stage, for a tire that had still allot of thread on it.

Spoke to a guy at Supaquick and he told me that the bubble will get a little hole from wear and tear and thats exactly what happened.

Ok well update, got the tire changed out but now there is a ****ing dent in the actual rim on the inner side, facing in towards the car interior. Put a spare on now instead, someone please tell me that the dent is fixable or i can ignore it?

I suppose it all depends on how badly dented it is, where do you stay so people can point out some mag repair places,

I know here in Boksburg that Mag magic do repairs to dented/scratched mags.

I stay in the randburg/fourways area. To be clear when i say dent, i mean that its on the inside of the rim where the air resides and the tyre actually makes contact with the rim itself, the rim isnt a perfect circle anymore. Im not losing air pressure it seems but im very worried about what this could translate to. Its dented in at about 1 cm at its deepest.

How much was the tyre, of interest?

Regarding the rim, if you're not losing air and you're not getting a vibration - I see no issue. But more often than not a dent does cause vibration ...

Were motorists advised of hazardous road conditions? i.e. Road signs warning of potholes? If not then you could probably claim from the road accident fund or something. It'll take a loooong time but you do have rights.

Tyre was R1015 all inclusive, since i only needed one i just picked up the same one i busted which was a Hankook Ventius S1 Evo 195/45R16.
