I used to have a super duper amazing 4Mbps line in Bryanston. My number is 011 706 16xx. Since 2011 up until June 2013, it's been syncing at 6Mbps. I've been using Telkom Internet ever since. Speed Test used to show average of 4Mbps to about 5Mbps.

In June, my modem indicated that my line was syncing as a 1meg line. I made numerous calls to Telkom Fault logging. Technicians kept on saying they fixed it, but it stayed the same. After about my 3rd fault log, the technician replaced something at the Exchange at C/O William Nicol and Main and the modem reported that the line was syncing at 4Mbps, but speed tests revealed only 2.5 - 3Mbps. It slowly started deteriorating again.

Now I'm getting 0.02Mbps on Speedtest.net. My ping to Telkom's own speedtest server is 1000ms on average.

This is what my modem is showing:
Downstream Upstream
SNR Margin
:
13.0 13.0 db
Line Attenuation
:
34.5 17.0 db
Data Rate
:
4096 512 kbps

I have 4 ADSL modems - tried them all, they all report the same. Also tried with M-Web account and Afrihost and the speedtest is the same, so line must have an issue again.

Just reported it with Telkom this morning again. hoping that it will get resolved.

There's a shiny new white Telkom box that they've been working on, about 100m from my house. I hope and pray that it means that they will connect me to that box in the near future.

Right now, my ADSL is pretty much useless. But, between 10:00am and 17:00 I actually get decend speeds - but it gets very bad early morning and evenings.

Mmm something must've happened in June, cause that's when my ADSL packed up in Bryanston area... and i see lots of other reports about June 2013! That's our first clue!

I was experiencing serious latency problems for several months until quite recently - logged faults, changed the line, changed the modem. Classic 'second hop' congestion symptoms. Then suddenly one day, it came good again (about a month ago). No word from Telkom about what they did, but for now, I'm just keeping my fingers crossed!
I'm on the east side of Bryanston, several kms from the exchange. No sightings of white MSAN boxes in the neighbourhood.

I got the same effect on my 011 706xx number. About a week ago Telkom dropped a MSAN about 50 meters up the road, (Dundee Str), but have yet to see any techies there to switch over...

Telkom came to my house today because of the fault I logged.

The tech said that there was a lose connection at the Dsr or something. Apparently there are 2 wires that should connect somewhere and 1 was lose for me so my line was 'unbalanced'.

So now my Internet is kinda better. But he confirmed that the white box 100m from my house is an MSAN about ready to go live. Want to chat to the guys working on it tomorrow and find out exactly when. The MSAN is located on Main Rd between Grosvenor and Petunia streets.

So now my Internet is kinda better.

"Kinda better" isn't great. Should be perfect, or at least how it used to be. Is all your speed slow (i.e. Local and International), or can you pinpoint one specific thing being slow? Can you provide a Traceroute to saix or something for us?

MSAN's in Bryanston? How exciting!

Has anyone else seen one of those elusive white boxes in Bryanston, and if so, where?
If you see a concrete slab on your sidewalk, about 2m x 1m, with pieces of pipe and conduit sticking out of it, you're looking at an MSAN site. With Fourways, Parkmore/Morningside, and now Randburg covered with MSAN's, Bryanston is pretty well surrounded.
We live in hope...

Up to Feb this year I was connecting at 8.5 to 8.8 mb/s, then dropped to 3.2 to 3.6: was on Mweb uncapped 10meg package. On Mweb's advice I changed to the uncapped 4 meg package, as problem was on Telkom side. Since then I have been unable to get back onto the 10 meg package, although the Telkom website states that 10 meg is available in my area. I am in Arlington just off Grosvenor. Mweb tecchies advise that they can see that my connection would be highly erratic, so why pay for a service I can't get.

Ok so I spoke to a Telkom guy who was checking the MSAN out at Dundee Street on Saturday. They are starting the commissioning process today. He said all Bryanston MSANS will be operational in the next 3 weeks!

I jog around my area (Bryanston High) and I can't find a single MSAN. Plenty of old DSLAM's (one even looks brand new), but can't spot any MSANs.

Anyone tested Telkom Mobile LTE in the area? I know someone who can come out to your premises and test.

My speeds today (typical) for 01146327**:
Last Result:
Download Speed: 40 kbps (5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 356 kbps (44.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 84 ms

I've been tweeting Telkom and they tell me MSAN is scheduled for 10 October. Hope they're telling the truth and that it will solve some of Bryanston's speed problems. of course, none of their previous promises panned out :-(

Here we go again.
700+ ms ping to second hop (IS) = exchange problem of some magnitude!
And this at 5pm on a weekday?

Joburg speedtest server
Download Speed: 896 kbps (112 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 134 kbps (16.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 307 ms

My Bryanston ADSL is so slow the saix.net speedtest page won't even load. Par for the course for the last 7 months. Latest excuse is that they're getting too many ADSL connection requests. What yarn are they spinning you?

Will be doing some LTE tests in Bryanston tomorrow.

PLEASE post the LTE results. I'm going to have to either go LTE or Neotel fibre. Both are going to be expensive, but I'm just wasting my money and my life with telkom ADSL
