Budget 2016 - Discussion thread

But infrastructure (including Eskom's infrastructure) isn't finished using resources once it's built. Maintenance is hugely expensive. Take a look at the backlog (in terms of cost) that our water and road infrastructure has, for example.

If run properly the infrastructure should be paying for its own maintenance and expansion by charging customers directly, like SAPO, Eskom, PRASA and SAA do (I mean like they charge customers directly, not that they are run properly of course).

You'll get exceptions, roads and water infrastructure are trickier, but in general any sane business looks for a return on their investment when they build things, investors don't just keep throwing money at you for spending money that can't generate a return. I'd love for our government to take a page out of that book and see tax payers more as investors.

That would be lovely, yes. :p

I forecast all taxes going up. Income, capital gains, cgt, fuel levy, sin, all except vat.

and electricity increase is announced tomorrow by NERSA! What a depressing week..

That refers to elected officials, I am referring to employees.

Elected officials are still government employees i.e. a minister of whatever is on the government payroll surely, but I take it you're referring more to the majority like policemen etc?

No one yet mentioned this that I'm aware of, but I just realized that Pravin had another problem. Tax revolt. We haven't mentioned it in a while, but I suspect that this is one of those things that might become a topic again soon.
