Budget 2018

We were given a heads up that an increase is coming, so we were adequately prepared. Most companies dealing with banks should've known.
Besides, not having this sort of thing as a configurable value is amateur as hell.

No one gave the heads up for my system other than me. Started raising the risk two weeks back and got permission a week ago to do the analysis and get rid of all the hard coding on VAT. As I sit here I am about half way done with the code and should be in final testing tomorrow. HAs earned me some serious brownie points at least with the bosses.

Don't worry we are getting a 30c decrease in petrol price... Which is how it is spun, though a good chunk of our petrol price is bloody tax.
Feul levy was R3,15 + 55c (new) + R1,63 (RAF) R5,28 in taxes for a liter of petrol. Roughly 40%. Remember next time you fill up.

You know most food stuffs the poor buy is not charged vat. So they won't feel it as badly as you'd hope unfortunately, it's not like they pay for electricity or water. The sugar tax would affect them more though.

ALL foodstuff needs to be transported. Fuel tax increase gonna hit that.

More of their total monthly income goes to VAT than ours does though.

For instance - VAT is charged on airtime, and of course on alcohol. Plus the sin tax on alcohol is increasing, as with cigarettes.

Are canned foods VAT exempt? I know some basic staples are, I'm just not sure what exactly is counted as a basic staple.

Taxis more than likely are VAT free - I'm sure they don't declare their earnings.

Actually I think the fuel hike will nail them the most. Food stuffs don't get to the spaza shop via donkey carts.

But they won't realise or attribute it directly to the fuel hike. It will just be normal price increases so people hoping the poor will turn against the ANC for that is living in a dream world.

Hopefully the DA and EFF will campaign with this.

This one worries me. Steam etc?

Today, we update draft VAT regulations to cover foreign businesses selling electronic services to South African consumers.

<quote>A higher estate duty tax rate of 25 per cent for estates greater than R30 million,</quote>

Man, do they have to do this? I am getting really really angry now

Read the speech transcript, was linked earlier.

Useful as that may be I am more interested in the little tidbits he goes off script with and drops hints about what is actually going on.
