Budget, mid-range, and flagship Android smartphones compared

I recently got an iPhone 15 Pro Max as a birthday gift from my aunt.

The camera is awesome and it's pretty fast but I still feel my old Xiaomi Pro is miles better...maybe I'm getting old.

Lol no NFC
no esim
cameras that suck (if you travel overseas or have kids and want to snap a few great looking pics you're SOL)
no wireless charging
slow processor with no on device ML
virtual proximity sensor that sucks
Samsung bloatware (2 app stores, various M$ apps you have to disable, Bixby etc. etc.)
Terrible speakers
There's a reason people spend more on a premium device.
Maybe, but I have never felt I missed any feature with my current phone.

Camera takes picture just fine.
Wireless charging. Yes nice to have, but not essential. When I used to have a flagship phone, I would wireless charge, but usb c is not that much of pain.

Samsung software can be replaced/removed.

I stream via my car premium sound system and at home though various bluetooth devices.

And some people dont see the need spending more for features they will never need.

And should I need that features in the future, it will probably come to the cheap phones in the future.

I've never bought a second hand phone before but I'm thinking of going second hand for my next one. I don't need the latest features and can do with slight wear and tear if it means I save a couple of thousand. Obviously, I will try and buy from a trusted used/refurb dealer.
Why not buy a slightly older phone that's still new? Like an S22 instead of an S24 as an example?

Yeah I wouldn't buy that crap. Spend 1k more and get a decent entry-level phone that will last 5 years.

My moms husband has been jobless for around 4 months now, before that the company he worked for was not paying him, paying his rent directly to the rental company and giving him R1k to R2k per month for them to live off "till things get better then we pay you everything we promise".

Anyway, he lost his job around 3 months ago (took the company car in for a service on company request and then was told the company fetched it, called them and they said sorry ne, we liquidating, no more job), UIF still not happening etc cause the "liquidated company" that is still running fine never put in the paperwork after they fired him.

Anyway, they flogged his phone at the pawn shop for food or electricity or beer or whatever and have been sharing a dual sim phone for months.

He is supposed to start working again in the next week or two (waiting for some contract to be approved or something) but the dual sim phone they were using/sharing stopped working.

I ended up buying them a R650 dual sim "unlocked" mobicell phone from pep. It did a software update and then was locked (I don't know why I still trust anything with an mtn logo anywhere near it).

I took it back, gave them the cash and a bit more and they bought some dual sim Nokia for R850 from pep.

At least he will be able to receive the call when the job finally happens.

Sterkte.

Years ago, I cut all family off who thought I was an unlimited credit facility. They soon got jobs and all of them are now employed and looking after themselves.

I got a ZTE Nubia Red Magic 6R last year from Cell C for R249pm over 24 months. Total R6000 spread over 2 years. It has Snapdragon 888. My friends can't believe I paid so little for this much of a phone. Plus I get data and 100 minutes a month that I don't use. In terms of specs (CPU and GPU) it's equal to a Galaxy S21 but video and camera are better.

Yea I have told them this is the last.
Now to see if I can hold to that.
