Left out by telecom firms like the one owned by billionaire Carlos Slim, a remote Mexican mountain village now runs its own mobile phone network to communicate with the outside world.

A community with initiative, glad to see them taking up the challenge and opening-up and speaking to organisations to assist them with such an endeavour. I’m sure the corporates will exploit them soon, companies and especially Carlos Slim don’t won’t to be outdone by simple villagers, and they simply established their own service delivery.

What an awesome project! Are their any links to the equipment specifications, costs and so forth? I would think this could be a pretty cool project to look at here in SA if the pricing is reasonable. Think of the wireless guys in rural areas offering a cellular type service as well!

OK cool, what about the legal framework - I see it is using GSM which means you are stuck in the 900MHz licensed range for mobile operators.

Offcourse a village of 2500 people would not be profitable for a cellphone network.This network was probably put up by the druglords.
