These kinds of incidents seem to be becoming more prevalent by the day.

I also want to film those f_ckers who mess up the Palmyra/Stanhope Bridge intersection on most mornings.

Whooo! thanks for that vid - that's mad though popping at those speeds :D

Don't know if Krycor is a biker, but anyone who has never ridden a bike has no idea of just how quickly you accelerate on a bike.

Even my lowly 800 makes mincemeat of most cars - on a superbike not even your high end 4 wheelers stand a chance in hell of keeping up much less passing you.

Only thing with running from Metro is they can radio ahead so you need to be in a place where you can duck off and hide quickly if you pull a stunt like that.

Not knowing who is speeding behind me, having someone blindly firing a gun at me and then me returning fire. This could get nasty should these "VIP" guys treat on the wrong toes.

That is definitely an idea. I've seen tons of Russian dashcam vids, but never really thought about it being transported here. You're right, this country could do with a dashcam culture, for numerous reasons.

VIP cops ‘had right to shoot’

Durban - It was necessary to shoot. That was what the lawyer representing the mayoral bodyguards who fired at a motorist on the N3 last week said after the men were released on R5 000 bail each by the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Thulasizwe Mbanjwa and Sithembiso Mokoena, accused of attempted murder after firing at a 24-year-old motorist known only as Wynand, handed themselves over to police on Monday, relinquishing their firearms and replying in a written statement to the charges they faced.

The pair are employed as VIP bodyguards for uMgungundlovu mayor Yusuf Bhamjee, but have been suspended pending the outcome of the court case.

Sphiwe Mncwango, their lawyer, said his clients had “had the right” to fire at Wynand as they had believed Bhamjee was in danger. They had fired only warning shots, he said.

The bodyguards were trained to use guns. That neither Wynand nor his vehicle had been hit was a “clear indication they were warning shots”.

“This is being blown out of proportion. There were certain circumstances that led up to the warning shots,” Mncwango said, adding that he could not divulge particulars of the case now that it was in court. “The issue is, was it necessary or not necessary to shoot? And we are saying it was necessary to shoot.”



Mbanjwa and Mokoena were escorting Bhamjee to Durban when they allegedly opened fire after Wynand failed to move out from in front of their Corolla.

Wynand escaped unscathed, while the Corolla sped off to rejoin the mayor’s convoy.

Mncwango said that he’d approached police on Friday afternoon to inform them that his clients would hand themselves over on Monday, and all that “normal processes” would be followed before their court appearance.

“We gave our explanation to police. They were taken into custody and brought to court,” he said.

Mbanjwa, Mokoena and Mncwango spent nearly eight hours at the Pinetown police station with detectives on Monday, before the bodyguards were taken to court for their first appearance.

For Wynand, the arrests were a relief.

“I am glad they were arrested and will get what is coming to them. Everybody is afraid to come out (because of the risk posed by irresponsible behaviour). It only takes one person to speak up,” he said.

The motorist was quoted previously as saying that the shooting was unprovoked and that his biggest “crime” was failing to get out of their way fast enough.

The prosecutor, Vikesh Sewnath, requested time for the investigation to be completed.

The magistrate granted this, postponing the matter to November 18.

The State alleges that Wynand’s car was shot at after he allegedly failed to give way to the mayoral entourage. A passenger in a vehicle with a blue light fired two shots at Wynand’s car, before he stopped. The driver of the vehicle stopped and alighted, and also fired two shots at the car.

Now this is what I don't understand. Protocol dictates that they should attempt to get the mayor (or well the VIP) to safety. Why now does the backup vehicle in this case stop and engage what could at worst, have been a disgruntled motorist?

If the two guys get off from the attempted murder charge, I would, if I were the victim, sue them for pain and suffering. The judge would look kindly on that.

Warning shots?

Please.. this had nothing to do with warning shots, but to show a motorist who was potentially obeying the law (we don't know if he felt it was safe to move over or not), that these muppets thought they were more important than him.

One of these days they will tussle with a professional who has his weapon on him, and it will end badly for the VIP protection detail.

Legally if someone shoots at you intending to cause you harm, you're allowed to return equal force. I do not however, want to try this with cops or the likes. It might not end well in the long run.
 
Two appear for blue light shooting

Two mayoral bodyguards have appeared in the Pinetown Magistrate's Court on attempted murder charges, the Witness newspaper reported on Tuesday.

The two -- Thulasizwe Mbanjwa and Sthembiso Mokoena -- are alleged to have opened fire on a motorist on the N3 last week when they were escorting Umgungungdlovu district mayor Yusuf Bhamjee.

The newspaper reported that the men's lawyer Sphiwe Mncwango told the court on Monday that "my clients believed that the mayor's life was in danger" and were therefore entitled to shoot at the motorist.

The two men were granted bail of R5000 each and Magistrate Wendolyn Robinson postponed the case to November 18 or further investigation.

One of the VIP bodyguards arrested for a last week’s N3 highway “blue light” shooting incident was a key player in the assassination of KwaZulu-Natal warlord Sifiso Nkabinde, it has emerged.
But, The Witness can reveal, Mbanjwa is more than a mayoral bodyguard.

He has a past that puts him at the centre of one of the darkest episodes in KwaZulu-Natal’s recent history - the bloody January 1999 assassination of Sifiso Nkabinde, the Richmond warlord and former ANC secretary-general in KwaZulu-Natal.

Mbanjwa was convicted and sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment for his role in the assassination.

KZN bodyguards appear in court

Two mayoral bodyguards accused of attempted murder appeared in the Pinetown Magistrate's Court on Monday, the National Prosecuting Authority said.

Thulasizwe Mbanjwa and Sthembiso Mokoena would be back in court on December 12 to decide if the NPA would proceed with prosecution, said KwaZulu-Natal NPA spokeswoman Natasha Ramkisson.

The two bodyguards allegedly shot at a motorist on the N3 last month while escorting Umgungundlovu district mayor Yusuf Bhamjee.
