The school where this incident occurred had a very good disciplinary record in the 80s and even the early 90s. There were plenty of very tough folks there; ask anyone who played rugby against Otto du Plessis!! (Jan Serfontein to mention one!)

Pity the school and surrounding schools have declined so rapidly.

This is why I will argue to the death that our old way of schooling was the way to go. None of us liked it at the time but just like in real life, there needs to be consequences for actions.

If she does her job right, she does not need to use force. Her presence and a raised voice should be enough to stop them. But she makes no effort to do anything, so they continue.

This kind of thing happens in schools on a daily basis and teachers can't do anything about it. Scholars have no discipline and no respect for authority because they know they can get away with almost anything.

When I was in school a fight in school grounds resulted in a lashing.

A second fight in school grounds resulted in suspension and disciplinary hearings or expulsion

3'rd would end in expulsion.

To the idiots who now blame the specific school and say its expected fro them, just check the other posts. Also check newspapers - it happens everywhere- irrespective of race, language or socioeconomic background.
Also taking your kid to a private school doesn't necessarily rid you of this.

Discipline is severely lacking in the youngsters of today. All they have to fear in class is demerit points

Only saw this now. What a pathetic nation we have become. There is absolutely no discipline and stems from the complete and utter lack of discipline from leaders in the country. I spoke to a lady sitting across me in our open plan. She is worried. She does not have a great income and she is extremely worried about the schooling of her child. This came about after a colleague and I discussed the quality of young adults coming from school and the level of their education - he interviewed 40 young adults fresh out of school for work on one of the power plants currently being constructed and 1 out of the 40 could tell him what the difference is between a meter, centimeter and millimeter. Now with this kind of violence and nothing being done about it, I can fully understand her fears. All I could tell her is to try to get her child enrolled in a better public school. That would mean that she had to move to a traditional white suburb (this is in Gauteng) - unfortunately she can not afford it. This is sad sad sad. Our kids are the future and something needs to be done to get discipline installed in schools. And it needs to filter down from this country's so-called leaders.

A big part of the problem is that the schools get all bent out of shape if the person being bullied fights back. Sometimes the only thing that handles a bully is sudden, extreme violence.
