My wife is a teacher and I can say that this type of thing happens almost daily. The teacher's can't do a darn thing about it. Raising your voice in class does absolutely nothing to deter them. There was one incident where a kid stabbed another one with a pair of scissors...what happened.....suspended for a week. Sad state of affairs.

Only saw this now. What a pathetic nation we have become. There is absolutely no discipline and stems from the complete and utter lack of discipline from leaders in the country. I spoke to a lady sitting across me in our open plan. She is worried. She does not have a great income and she is extremely worried about the schooling of her child. This came about after a colleague and I discussed the quality of young adults coming from school and the level of their education - he interviewed 40 young adults fresh out of school for work on one of the power plants currently being constructed and 1 out of the 40 could tell him what the difference is between a meter, centimeter and millimeter. Now with this kind of violence and nothing being done about it, I can fully understand her fears. All I could tell her is to try to get her child enrolled in a better public school. That would mean that she had to move to a traditional white suburb (this is in Gauteng) - unfortunately she can not afford it. This is sad sad sad. Our kids are the future and something needs to be done to get discipline installed in schools. And it needs to filter down from this country's so-called leaders.

there are a lot of schools with great discipline, of course when you try and heard 300 students you will end up getting bad examples but for the most part, many kids are disciplined. it only takes 2 videos to make a nation **** their pants

Raised voices helps a lot.

They are used by special forces all over the world as a means of authorty in stressful situations. I'm sure the must be an article about it somewhere. I'll go check, I know I read it somewhere...

Special forces also use colourful language that teachers can't use.

For example if you want to quiet down a grade 7 class, you can't shout STFU!!!!.

You must rather say, "would you mind shutting the **** up, please".

perhaps in the end it is up to the schools. i just know that for 15 unruly kids, there is normally 100 well behaved kids

I did my practical's while studying for a education degree. Even a decade ago they were bullying and stabbing each other (my last day of 2nd practical). Experience beyond being a pupil thus.

Bullying has always been basically ignored at South African schools. Hell in the old days it was even tacitly encouraged. Although part of the tacit agreement to allow it to go on was that it be done out of sight of teachers.

Our kids are the future and something needs to be done to get discipline installed in schools.

There is no easy way to do that. The problem schools are the ones in poorer areas and with fewer resources. That tells us it is a broader problem in those communities. For that there is no easy fix.

I reckon my idea of roaming punishment dispensers is the way forward.

Each school district gets a certified 'beater of kids' who goes from school to school applying his/her cane to the bottoms of misbehaving scholars who have earned a place on 'the list' for that week.

Wouldn't survive a week on the Cape Flats.

Suspension is a ridiculous practice. It encourages those who don't want to be in school to misbehave. Corporal punishment won't work either.

i don't work at EVERY school, but i go around to a lot, and am on friendly terms with staff at them. even schools in townships have respectful and great kids helping me and talking to me. i know that there are special needs schools and then there are schools where there are spoilt rich kids who like to pretend they're gangsters.

i witnessed a lot of bullying in school, of course i grew in a rough neighbourhood

In the end I think it comes down to discipline at home and the social effects of the nonsense that happens at school. If you have a class with 40 students and they all root for 1 misbehaving student it fuels the fire. Regardless of whether the 39 are well behaved, respectful kids. Human beings are silly that way.

The school management is also a big factor. I've seen a teacher taking misbehaving kids to the principal and he shrugs his shoulders saying "What am I supposed to do?" Right then and there the kid knows he can get away with anything.

If she does her job right, she does not need to use force. Her presence and a raised voice should be enough to stop them. But she makes no effort to do anything, so they continue.

It should be, but some teachers lack authority and strength of character. Those are the teachers who used corporal punishment and are now stripped of their sole means of asserting themselves.

This is why I will argue to the death that our old way of schooling was the way to go. None of us liked it at the time but just like in real life, there needs to be consequences for actions.

f she tries to intervene the only thing she can do is ask them to stop, and that would only make it worse for the kid being bullied in the long run.

So there is nothing a teacher now or at any time any where could do about it.

The school where this incident occurred had a very good disciplinary record in the 80s and even the early 90s. There were plenty of very tough folks there; ask anyone who played rugby against Otto du Plessis!! (Jan Serfontein to mention one!)

So in truth bullying was probably rife at the school in the 80s. The teachers probably knew about it and allowed it to happen. They just required that the beatings happen out of sight.

Anyway, onto suspension. How do you protect the behaved kids from the repeatedly and purposefully unruly kids then? They have a right to safe education.

Need to hear your solution. And counselling while they are still in the environment is not OK, can't have them causing problem for other pupils for the weeks or months it will take.

We had an incident like that where a kid stabbed another in the butt with a pair of scissors and the perpetrator ended up in jail because he was over 18. The thugs in there allegedly beat him up a bit and now he's sitting in a wheelchair.

I'm sorry but for all those white horse, ivory tower dwellers, that think the teacher could have just talked the bully out of his actions, I have to ask, have you ever dealt with a class of 25-30 children aged between 13-18 and tried to get them to sit still if there is even just 1 instigator? I have actual practical experience in this matter and it does not matter what the teacher did, once the floodgates are open, it's almost impossible to stop this sort of thing.
