So after waking up at 3am this morning to the repeated sounds of gun shots in our complex, I have decided that burglar bars may be required.

I have been looking on the internet and found a product called Lexan ClearBars, anyone had any experience with these sorts of security devices?

Any other suggestions on brands and 'models' would also be appreciated.

I'm not a fan of the full Trellidoor option for windows.

You should not even be considering those bars. It's plastic and not that hard to break off....If you don't like Trelli, your other option is Spanish Burglar Bars (I think). Not my preference though.

I have Trelli throughout my house, and they are reasonably priced.

Another vote for Trellidor. I had them put up after spending an hour tied up with my family while my house was ransacked. Ugly as hell but they give me peace of mind (Well, some).

my only fear with trelli is what if there is a fire? do you get the kind that can be opened in an emergency?

Yes you do, but they cost extra. In addition, if you going to get a burglar bar that can be opened in case of fire (Trellidoor aside), that means they will be able to open in case of burglary as well.

That's my wife's biggest fear, if there's a fire, however I will look into the Trellidoor's.

How is the Xpanda range?

Was about to order them and then found numerous posts on the net explaining how they can be broken into with an off the self min flame torch (the type used for cooking).

Trellidoor are very expensive so look at something like spanish bars or even just the traditional Xpanda bars that your mount with pop rivets.

If the guys really want to get in, the will.

You get what you pay for.

As for fire (my fear as well), you can key safes that use combinations or/and you can have a box mounted on the inside with a glass cover connected to your alarm. If you break the cover, then the alarm triggers a fire alarm.

I ill eventually install Trelli/Xpanda/whatever in my new house and will also place a set of keys in the cupboards in each room where only I and my children will know about it and will most likely do it with one of those boxes that triggers the alarm if broken.

sounds like a plan

I got the clearbars in my place (its a complex). It would probably take a while to burn through them with a blowtorch as they dont just melt, at best you weaken them but you would still have to lever them off or kick them off somehow which would make a noise. Also they not very easy to cut at all. I also pulled on them as hard as I could and all they do is flex a little and then go back to their normal form. However I probably wouldn't have got them if I didn't live in a complex.

Go look on youtube for videos of how tough those plastic bars actually are.

I also made sure I got them installed on the inside of the unit and not the outside. Guys have already tried to break into my place and because I had the windows installed in a metal casing they could not break the window out or lever the window open.

Also got Trellidoor installed on my backdoor and a metal frame security gate with double length locks installed on the front door. Added an extra deadbolt that can lock from inside or outside on both doors.

Finally got an alarm with PIRs inevery room and sensors on the doors. Going to add laser beams to the garden :)

I'd pay good money for a reliable ninja :D

When they tried to break into my place I found them standing on the patio trying to figure out how to get in.
Had my Trellidoor installed on a Thursday and on Friday night they were there trying to figure out how to get past it.

Broke the lock on my door the bastards!

Fixed burglar bars will be much more effective and alot cheaper then Trelli/Xpanda etc. You can buy them at Builders and install yourself . or you could weld your own and then paint.

Have fire extinguishers and smoke detectors at both ends of the property.

Clear bars aren't just any plastic, they are polycarbonate. Hell they make the F22 Raptors canopy out of this stuff...

what about trellidoor prices? anyone care to share what they paid for their choice of product and estimate number of doors, windows etc. covered?
