Burglar Bars

When we built the house bars were fitted into brick frame and windows in front of that.. ..

Jip, smoke detectors is the answer for the fire problem (about R150 each). Try a Yale security shop or builders warehouse or other shop of your choice.

Makro has them too. But get a fire extinguisher as well. No point in hearing the alarm and not being able to do anything about it.

Burglar bars won't stop any bullets. What you need is a no fly zone followed by drones. And if that doesn't work, ground troops

May I suggest these guys: http://www.trelliscompany.co.za/

Installed within a week. I have used them for several installations over the past five years. I have one Trellidor, but I rate the Trellis Company as being as good.

I have no connection with them other than as a satisfied customer.

So after waking up at 3am this morning to the repeated sounds of gun shots in our complex, I have decided that burglar bars may be required.

I have been looking on the internet and found a product called Lexan ClearBars, anyone had any experience with these sorts of security devices?

Any other suggestions on brands and 'models' would also be appreciated.

I'm not a fan of the full Trellidoor option for windows.

Not accepted by most insurance companies (I wanted to install them).

Trellidoor are very expensive so look at something like spanish bars or even just the traditional Xpanda bars that your mount with pop rivets.
Pop rivets?!? Ah...Somerset West. Here in GP steel bolts sunk into the wall are the norm.

Clear bars aren't just any plastic, they are polycarbonate. Hell they make the F22 Raptors canopy out of this stuff...

There goes that argument.

I also need to do burglar bars.
Thinking of doing Spanish bars on the outside of the house.

I got the clearbars in my place (its a complex). It would probably take a while to burn through them with a blowtorch as they dont just melt, at best you weaken them but you would still have to lever them off or kick them off somehow which would make a noise. Also they not very easy to cut at all. I also pulled on them as hard as I could and all they do is flex a little and then go back to their normal form. However I probably wouldn't have got them if I didn't live in a complex.

Go look on youtube for videos of how tough those plastic bars actually are.

I also made sure I got them installed on the inside of the unit and not the outside. Guys have already tried to break into my place and because I had the windows installed in a metal casing they could not break the window out or lever the window open.

Also got Trellidoor installed on my backdoor and a metal frame security gate with double length locks installed on the front door. Added an extra deadbolt that can lock from inside or outside on both doors.

Finally got an alarm with PIRs inevery room and sensors on the doors. Going to add laser beams to the garden :)

How do they fare against a car bottle jack e.g. the burgular's usually take the bottle jack, put it between the bars and then jack them apart. Annoying a cheap bottle jack is <R100 and it kills burglar bars quite well...

my only fear with trelli is what if there is a fire? do you get the kind that can be opened in an emergency?

Bolt cutters, crowbar and hacksaw under the bed.
Seriously, everybody should have a set there for a fire emergency.

reviving an old thread but my friends friend in Centurion had the Lexan clear bars where they cut it very easily and broke into his home. If anyone wants more info, PM me and I will get the guys name you can contact directly and ask questions if need be.

Just as easy to cut any security bar with bolt cutters and then pull them aside. Bars are just a deterrent and as stated before should be one of a multilayer security system.

I have the following:
* gravel for making noise
* dual laser trip beams around the perimeter
* stand alone wireless PIR's outside to monitor strategic entry points
* clear bars
* standard iron security gate with double lock on front door
* 2 extra large locks on front door
* inside only slide lock on backdoor
* trellidoor on backdoor
* magnetic switches on all doors and windows linked to alarm
* PIRs in every room linked to alarm
* panic buttons

There's plenty to go through before you get to my clear bars so I'm not too worried about anyone trying to cut them.

@^^vampire^^ you a bit tinfoil paranoid?

I got nosey neighbours and dog crap all over the lawn. Seems to work for me ;)

But this is what I have on my perimeter walls and kitchen forecourt (house was a crime target before I moved in and no problems since then):

(edit: you can feed fibre optic cable through the pipes of these spikes and connect it to your alarm. So if the guys saw through them, then your panic alarm will be triggered. Concept works for any pipes)

Wife asked me yesterday how much was the quote to upgrade the security alarm as its outdated and she wants it on at night (stay-at-home armed). The quote was to add strip beams to the walls as we have pets and pet-smart beams are impractical for our yard.

Agree that its all about putting the guys off.
