Okay, well I've ordered it so we shall see....

Another thing which is interesting to me is in AHCI mode by the remove hardware safely toggle in the taskbar all my drives are now listed. Not the case in IDE mode. How come??

Also my observation, although the benchmarks have improved my pc felt a lot more responsive running in IDE mode!!!!! WTF?!

You need to use AHCI for hotswopping.

BTW, changing for AHCI to IDE shouldn't require a re-format... Change it back and see if it is still sloppy? And, did you do those performance tweeks, like moving page file, etc...?

Ja, editing a registry file enabled IDE to AHCI post installation. It's actually settled down nicely now and running close to expectations so I'm inclined to leave it on the preferred AHCI mode.

As for performance tweaks I've done bugger all.... :wtf:

Still looking into TRIM feature and disabling defragmentation, and disabling Superfetch. Running using the high performance power option, disabling hibernation, there's a whole plethora of optional tweaks, it's a bit of a pain in the backside quite frankly...
 
Ja, but do it once and it's done.

Also, Windows 7 takes about a week to "settle" itself and then it runs great.

Agreed. I can check now though, it's running on high octane now!!! Boot time is just ridiculous!! Photoshop opens within 2-3 seconds, searching email using keywords produces instant results, shutting pc down is blitz. This is certainly a worthwhile upgrade, no doubt. Going to stick another 4gb of ram in here and once the SATA high performance port card is installed it will be a R3.5k mini upgrade but certainly worth it...
 
So the Asus U3S6 6GB SATA port card arrived. It's installed and running but performance is still unimpressive...
