Buying a bakkie - help !

Hello everybody, my girlfriend and I need a second car and we feel sentimental about the idea of a bakkie - sleeping on a matress on the back on camping trips, throwing our bikes in the cab, having all that space to load in tables and display cabinets for the 5/6 annual markets that she has a stand at...

BUT, I'm battling to know where to start - I thought I'd do some perusing of gumtree's second hand bakkies to get an idea of what's out there but there just seem to be loads and I'm a bit confused. Thought I might appeal to the experts for some pointers. From what I can gather, Corsa's are not very fuel efficient... Ok, that's just about all I've got at this stage.

I'd put our budget at about R100k and we're in Cape Town.

Looking forward to replies and getting involved in the mybroadband forum community :)

I've had 1800 Sport Corsa Utility for 5 years, sold it last week. I got around 14km per liter with it. Yes its not magic figures but remember its the 1800... If you get the 1400 Sport you will have years of joy out of it and wont want to really sell it ever. I sold it for only 20000 less than what I paid for it 5 years ago also. They keep their value very well.

If you're looking for a bakkie in the Corsa's league, look no further than a 1.8 Sport, you should get it for around R85000 now quite easily in perfect condition. It has all the features to make you feel like your driving a car, windows even closes by themselves.
 
You looking for a small front wheel drive bakkie like a Corsa or Nissan?
The Corsa diesel is propably the best bet here. Do not even look at the rest.
The old Nissan rearwheel drive would be my first choice, but they SO overpriced. No comfort and horrible wind noise, but they last!

Or you looking for a decent hunk of steel, like with a rearwheel drive 4x2?
Isuzu is slow, but it will get you there.
Toyota is way overpriced for what you get.
Look for a nice Triton, Colt or Hardbody. They last and not too expencive to maintain.
No fancy electronics so you can even service them yourself :)

Get yourself a good 2nd hand diesel for around R75k and save the rest for upgrades.

P.S> Do not even look at Nissan petrol bakkies under 3l. They just suck juice with no performance at all.
You mentioned economical so petrol would be out anayway :)

So I've narrowed it down to:

Corsa Utility 1.4,
Ford Bantam 1.3i XL A/C
Nissan NP200...
...and Fiat Strada as an outside option...
