Buying a bed. Queen vs King.

Hi Guys,

I'm in the market for a new bed. In the CT area, so if anyone knows of a better value option than bedsdirect.co.za (cheapest prices for the same brands of beds I could find) please let me know. Specifically I'm looking at their own branded memory foam top, no turn spring mattress. Is buying a no-turn mattress a big no-no?

So a couple of questions. Are brand names really better? Is foam better than springs? And when it comes to size, how unwieldy is having a king size bed in the bedroom? There will be acceptable amounts of space left on either side (half metre +) with no cupboards in the way. What's the cost difference over time (bedding etcetera)? Is the bedding uncomfortably huge to wash? Etc. Is all of this really worth being able to comfortably accommodate three people in the bed if and when a threesome ever happens?

Totally depends on the size of the bedroom. I've even seen some rooms that struggle with a queen, nevermind a king.

If two people sleep on it ... go king size. It might hurt your pocket now, but you'll recover and be grateful that you took the plunge.

Go King Extra Length. Don't skimp on getting a decent bed. And decent linen. Better to eat pap en derms for a few months if that's what it takes. It is hard to overstate the benefits of a good bed.

Can't go extra length and have my desk in front of the bed. However, it's not a worry as I'm only 1.75m.

Once you go King , you can never go back, well worth the extra.

King - I would never go back. Useful when you have kids as well, more space for all of you when they climb in.

You need a metre on all sides.

Spring matresses is alright if you get pocketed springs. The connected springs is like a trampoline. Foam will lose its firmness faster than springs.

No-turn just means only one side has a top to save on costs and you cannot turn it. It is better to have one that can turn.

We have a king size extra length, I stayed over at mom mom's house when they went away and they have a queen size.
I felt like I was sleeping on a pillow not a bed.

King, extra length if you have the space. That way you can fit two humans and 3 cats with comfort. :p

So I actually went and measured my room. It's 3.1m x 3.5m. That leaves 63cm either side for a King size and 79cm for a Queen size. The on-suite bathroom and hallway runs onto the one side, so there is ample space from the one side. The other side has an extra 23cm nook for where the curtain is.

I won't go extra length, because 1) I need to have a PC in the room - so that I can lie in bed and watch series and stuff. 2) Placing my bed in the position coming from the hallway, as to where I King size would be, the last 10cm or so of the bed is already in a bit annoying place as you have to walk around it quite sharply. With a three quarter bed the room feels extremely empty.

I bought a King Extra Length + Extra Depth when I lived in a room that could accommodate it... I was single, most nights - and it was awesome - couldn't touch the sides :p

Now I have the same bed cramped into a bedroom, a wife, two small dogs, and one giant breed, the dogs should be in their own beds, but come morning - I'm almost falling off the bed... considering a single bed for myself :p

The pets always want to sleep on me anyway. Otherwise I agree with the general sentiment - get the biggest bed you can fit in the room.

Bought a special made bed 2.1m x 2.1m. Best investment.
