Buying a bed

Those are the type of mattresses I'm looking at now - a pocket coil hybrid.

Why would you say pocket coil was a mistake? And what brand was it?

Where did you buy it from that they did not want to accept a return?

Jirre now I’m stuck for remembering the brand but it was the whole pocket coil and latex top and all that.

From the first night already I felt it was nothing like the one we tested in the shop but I gave it some time.

It started to feel more and more like the top wasn’t consistent and either pushed you in or out and the promise of you’ll never notice your partner move was bull****.

So after a “repair” under warranty it still wasn’t great. So about three month after purchase I lost my **** and did the whole CPA story and threats and fights and all that.

Shop was Lanark who also made the bed. That part of it was just fine. And they kept wanting to change it for another model but I just didn’t trust any of it any more.

Ended up with the Cloud Nine which is not pocket coil nonsense and also has the latex top and is infinitely firmer and more consistent and five years on still perfect.

Have since bought another for my daughter who is happier than can be.

Granted if you want a very soft mattress experience pocket coil is probably for you. However as someone with major back pain I simply can’t tell you how bad an idea that is.

Firmer is better. Even if it feels outrageous at first.

If your current mattress is very soft that is probably the reason for your back pain already.

No help to the OP, but just a rant: What I don't understand is why the main manufacturers (Simmonds, Sealy etc) don't make bases with storage drawers in them in South Africa. They seem to be pretty much standard in many places overseas. If you want one here you either have to get something 'tacked on' to a slatted base frame, and I don't want that, or else get something custom made. It's great to be able to store out of season bed linen out of the way.

Never mind even the bases. Finding a proper bed that does that is as impossible.

I was very close to making one myself and then eventually just gave up on the idea.

Especially for the kids it’s such a simple and easy concept for what is otherwise a huge waste of space.

This

Mattress warehouse has the best prices.

Strictly for a mattress they are the cheapest.

But I found Beds Online to be a bit cheaper overall when you’ve added a bed to the mix or even a base.

Model dependant of course.

****

Only ever buy a bed online once you’ve actually laid on it for real.

And when you do that take your own pillow and actually lie on it for a good few minutes not just seconds.

Thanks. At least I know who to avoid.

According to guides I've read, I need a medium firm mattress. Like, 6 out of 10 in the firmness scale. They say that because I am a side sleeper, I cannot sleep on something too firm because otherwise it will hurt me. And, because I am on the heavier side (I weigh 90KG), I need something a little firmer. But still not too firm.

I've seen those foam only beds - what puts me off them is that apparently they don't conduct heat well and people get hot while sleeping on them. This is a major problem for me, as I get extremely hot while sleeping. Even in winter, I cannot sleep with anything more than a thin duvet on me. No extra blanket or extra sheet. Anything more than that, and I wake up covered in sweat - in winter. So, they say that a pocket coil mattress is cooler because it conducts heat better.

Fine if you're familiar with the brand, order online - but most people prefer to feel how it behaves, so best to pay a bit more so you know what you're getting.

You didn’t read the whole post you quoted did you?

I assumed you meant Mattress Warehouse as the online factor, but I guess they would have a physical facility somewhere.

That’s where the top makes all the difference, it’s not really the mattress itself that makes it hot or cold.

Memory foam gets super hot and retains it. Latex top doesn’t.

Same goes for the side sleeping factor. You can have a pretty firm mattress overall for your weight but a more comfortable top for the side sleeping factor.

I’m also a side sleeper for the record and sensitive to heat. It’s a non-issue on my latex top Cloud Nine.

You will only know through testing out really. Everyone is different.

Personally, I think there is something wrong with having to spend so much money on a decent mattress. For 10k, one can get a scooter, a UHD TV, a frikken firearm ffs.

I think there be collusion...

I think the problem is that people buy so few mattresses. I've replaced my TV more often than I've replaced my mattress.

So, they have to keep a mattress factory operational when you might buy one mattress every 10 years.

My mattress was probably bought in around 2003 and my mom used it for about 3 years before me. So, it probably has 11 years of use. Which is also another reason I think it is time to replace it - it is my mom's bed. I'm sure some people would find that weird. I don't really find it weird, I just want to upgrade my sleep and have an end to back pain. Back is only a recent thing for me, but I'm not willing to let it get worse.

10K is actually a very reasonable middle of the range price.

I think below that you are generally looking at very basic options where comfort isn’t top of the priority list.

You get ones that are double or even more quite easily and then I agree it’s a case of diminishing returns.

Something to remember is that many of these have 10-20 year warranties and that’s probably built into the price.

That being said 10k gets you a pretty ****ty scooter and not an amazing TV, where it gets you a pretty good mattress which is important as you spend 6+ hours a night on the thing.

Same reason you are willing to pay for creature comforts in your car as you spend loads of time in it.

I have no idea what it costs to make a mattress though through the sum of it’s parts so you may very well be right. After all this is a big part of Steinhoff’s business...

That wasn't really my point. Having said that, direct me to the many beds that have 10-20 year warranties?

Most of the major brands I’ve seen have at least a 10 year.

But I do remember some much longer back in the day were renowned for it. May have been Sealy.

I see some of the Cloud Nines have 15-25 year warranties.

Na ha dude. You know I am going to insist on this. Show us these major brands that give at least a 10 year warranty.

This is news. Since when, and at what price?

Check post.

Specifically used 10k more or less as examples.

It’s actually longer than initially thought and more like 20+.

And I’ll easily believe it for the foam varieties as I have a second bed in the house inherited from my folks that is 20+ years old and and still just fine so supporting a few that fail wouldn’t be too hard.

I seem to remember they had a problem with a mattress at some point that they assumed would be way out of warranty and called the place and they brought a spare while they took away the original. Don’t recall if it was replaced or repaired somehow but it was definitely supported through warranty.

Pocket coils and things I’m not so sure although one of the ones I listed above was a pocket coil.

I remember the hotels bought specific “hospitality” models that allowed for some special cleaning that was supported by the warranty. Normal consumer mattresses have a requirement to be covered by a mattress protector.
