Buying a car in Lesotho

Well my partner bought a car Lesotho ,we went there 3 times on the fourth time ,he went alone to complete the car paperwork..now the car is in his name but the customs did not allow the car to pass this time around...they were given documents but they are saying the car is mot allowed to leave the country? What could help in this situation.???

Technically you are importing a car from another country as an individual which is not allowed.

Its a Japanese car

Japanese cars are not allowed to be registered in South Africa. You can import a car from Lesotho to South Africa easy just not the Japanese imports.

Nope you can buy a car from that side. But only if it’s a local car .

It's to protect the local manufacturing (yes it understood that only a few/certain models are manufactured here). We already have a surplus of used cars as well. Import of used cars, if allowed, maybe be much cheaper so will not be good for our local new/used cars sales . Bad for profits.

It has always been the case that you cannot import a second hand car from any country outside South Africa, with the notable exception of if you've been living and working in a foreign country and have owned the vehicle there for 12 months or longer. A lot of South Africans coming back from the UK for example import their cars back to South Africa without any problems because of this rule. What you cannot do however is just go to another country, buy a second hand car and think you're just going to be able to bring it back.

So my friend decided to buy a car- 2011 Mazda 2 1.3 for 46k from Lesotho and she was told that to change ownership is 2.5k and to change car registration papers is 15k.

*is she screwed and properly messed up big time here* ??
