Buying a Couch

Check gumtree or Facebook for people emigrating you could get something decent for well under your budget.

I was just about to say that.

Desperate sellers tend to take really cheap offers. Only issue is probably not that many high worth types who would emigrate and have an expensive couch to get rid of in Red's part of the world.

These ous are in SA too -

Apparently Crimea have seats going cheap - plenty folks emigrating :)

Well, as with most things I have never had to buy, I might need to adjust my budget and prepare a bit longer, or as you said, look for second hand. So one learns, specially in an economy that is falling apart.
There a highway buy and sell FB group in the Hillcrest Kloof Pinetown area - Plenty stuff gets traded on that.

Maybe?

My current lounge set I got for R500, 7 years ago when we got married, people who were in a hurry to relocate. First owners had it for 20 years+. I probably had it for 7 years now. It is just ugly and dated. Very strong fabric. Material is still as new, just needs a proper wash. Spunge needs attention. Springs need tensioning etc.

Yeah I'll look around. New would be nice and something more modern as long as it is comfy. But I'm not ignoring secondhand and is on a couple of groups.
Have you gone past Teds - Springfield park area?

Got my 3 piece there and shipped it over to Panama - its was cheaper than buying here.
Steel frame as opposed to timber and all fully recliners

I like this one in terms of comfort (doesn't look that pretty):
I have 2 of those exact ones.

It's extremely comfortable, as in extremely comfortable. But it starts sinking in after a while because it doesn't come with enough stuffing. So you'll either have to keep fluffing them every now and then (and the cushions are heavy), or buy more stuffing.

Other than that there's no issues. Comes with Scotchgard so it cleans easily enough, and the covers come off if you want to wash them (but again that's a bit of a mission). Still going strong 8 years later and it's seen a lot of abuse since the kid came along 3 years ago.

Not sure if I'd go with them again, or just get two lower maintenance couches and a couple of decent recliners for everyday use...

Grafton Everest. I bought a 3 2 1 from Value Lounge about 7 years ago. Still going strong. Was around R12k but a few years ago the same suite was about R20k. Regular vacuuming and an annual deep clean from one of those heavy duty cleaning companies works. My son is 6 and the suite has survived the mess that comes with a toddler.

Remember- "Genuine Leather" Specification includes bonded leather: pieces of leather glued together, and over time, these bonds disintegrates. "Genuine Leather" to me is the same as not real leather. Think back to "genuine leather" belts sold in most clothing shops that crack over time.

Leather made from animal hide is what you want. If is says "Genuine Leather" it is most likely 9 out of 10 bonded leather.

Just to add, middle is genuine leather as seen by the badge, dont wear it, bought whilst travelling, when I forgot my belt. The two on the edge are real leather. 20220816_060937.jpg

Got burnt buying a leather couch years back, turned out only the cushion and back rest were leather, the rest of started to crack. First and last time I ever dealt with Leather Gallery

Doesn't your local coffee snobbery hangout have those fancy couches for strangers to lounge and plan orgies on?

Thought you'd fancy those.

On a serious note, I bought those cheap cheap sort of like a R5 store couches as I was a poor bastard, think they were R1400 each for the 2 seaters, they look pretty and weigh about as much as a box of fags but they have disappearing sponge on the inside, also cant be washed, but for the price, I have no complaints.

Will need to get something proper soon though, guests laugh at me couches.

I was on a similar quest earlier this year. Had a similar budget, but was looking for two couches (leather).

My wife fell in love with a set significantly over budget at Leather Gallery. Luckily I could persuade her that I will be paying and I will not be paying that much.

After about 3 weeks of searching, we came across a sale at Incanda, where I got the Square Arms 2.2m for R13650. We went to the store to sit on it, and it is really as comfy as it gets and the quality is top notch. I can recommend that you make absolutely sure about the space you have vs the size of the couch, as we had to rearrange the living room to make them fit.

It’s got nothing to do with the economy. Go try buy a decent piece of furniture anywhere in the world and you’ll pay the same if not more. If you’re looking for something timeless and quality, which it seems you are, save up. You don’t sound like a student, and in life I believe one needs to collect beautiful things that last and bring joy to your home. A sofa is a utility item that gets used a lot and it needs to reflect your taste and fit as you grow your family. If I were you I’d double my budget and get something to be proud of.
