Buying a gaming PC

Budget is R17500 with a screen. R5.5 for the gpu?

Doable, but got to drop expectations for CPU.

i3-6100 CPU
8GB DDR4
Gigabyte H170 Mobo
250GB SSD
1TB HDD
Bitfenix Case
Corsair VS550
Nvidia GTX970

This setup leaves about R3k for a screen - which you can get away with for 1080p.

Only problem is no OS in this price, cannot really cut anywhere except the GPU now.

I could do 8gb ram. I could go more for the i5.
Where do u get your prices from?

Wootware.

Sorry, not 3k for the screen only 2.5k, you could tweak the build though.

Example build:

On your budget it's either save on the CPU or the GPU. If you go i5 you cannot afford a 970 or equivalent unless you go the second hand route where you could probably pick up some good deals (e.g. Carbonite).

Watch the video I posted above.

Yip, CPU's are more for "image" than anything else, when someone says they have a I3 its like something to be embarrassed about, regardless of how good it preforms.
After watching that video i'm considering getting a normal Pentium :D, As long as the GPU is good, almost any CPU would do.

Zoidberg`s video was informative, but it focussed on framerates. What about load times? occasional stutttering? future proofing?, also, will the next gen gpu`s be bottlenecked? wouldn`t want to spend a fortune on a gpu and have it bottlenecked.

or cpu intensive games ;)

But I rather enjoy my 16gig ram + i7; kinda useful for coding, gaming and vm :)

Me too. But an i7 @ R6000 vs i3 @ R2000 is a huge difference and if I was building a computer specifically for gaming the option is obvious when on a budget.

I'm open for donations for my next upgrade; pm details ? :)

I doubt you'd be bothered too much wrt load times, especially if you're loading games off some spinning rust. The video included the minimum frame rates on all the tests except for the DX12 test.

You can also always easily upgrade the CPU at a later stage, makes a lot more sense to do it that way then to get a crappy GPU first.

I see a whole lot of 970s in there. Nothing wrong with second hand parts...

Prices for them aren't that great though which is why I'd wait for the new cards to drop before buying anything in the 900 range, unless you spot a good deal.

Got my SO's 970 g1 at a cheaper rate than what they are asking, but then it was not almost 1 usd per 16 zar.

I'd probably grab the 1070 and a new case. All depending on the size of the 1070 seeing that it might not fit into my gigabyte poseidon :D

I suppose I could see if I can get something for my gigabyte 670 oc :o

It would be interesting to find out how many people upgrade their cpus. i`ve never bought a new cpu for an old pc, especially if it was old architecture. eg: wouldn`t bother upgrading my core 2 duo to a core 2 quad.
