Buying a new P.C

Now that I have given up on the heap of junk that is my current P.C I'm in the market for a new one. Unfortunately I was originally planning to upgrade towards the end of 2007 so I am short of money at the moment.

I have R5000 to spend and this is what I need:

Power Supply
CPU
Motherboard
Ram
Graphics card

My main requirement for the P.C is longevity. For example I'm thinking of possibly waiting for affordable DX10 cards to come out. I'm going to investigate my options but any advice would be appreciated.

You can make a pc up for under R2000, its more a question of specifications you want for your R5000's worth.

For instance, I just paid R320 for a new power supply and two fans - fitted, which I though reasonable, other may say that I paid too much.
 
um... get a 2x3800 amd am2( it cost's R1400-R1500 and because it's dual core its got future proofing) a mobo for a round R1000, a R400 psu, all ya need is a gig of ddr 533 for R1000, and a mis rx1650pro-T2D256E @ R1200, and then you'll have a cracking system, and it should be be @ or a little over your R5000 budget, and should get over 3000 3d mark06 points, i think you'll be happy with the system i just offered, and the gpu(x1650pro) is really quite a card, its got 24 pixel shader prossesors. so i think you'll be rather happy with it
 
Thats pretty good advice from scotty, if you want to save money then you can go for a cheaper board. A R500 mobo will be okay too, it should have all the features you need and then you can spend more on a graphics card and get a 7900GS, that would be a worthwhile upgrade.

Of course waiting for DX10 mid range cards is a pretty good idea... but you would have to see what the prices are like, chances are that when they first come out the price would maby be higher than what you can afford without going to budget cards.
 
I don't suppose I can get by on my 1GB Corsair DDR 400 ram for three months on my new system. I'll be getting a cash injection in march so maybe I can upgrade the ram then.
 
um, ekhaatvensters, is right, go for a R500 mobo, and with the other R500 you can get a 7600gt which would best suit you, as the 7900gs maybe a little out of budget, but the key to the computer is that dual core cpu, as that will give the future proofing you want, and get a single 1 gig ram, cuase if you need more you still got another 3 or so free slots for more ram, thus when vista comes out, you just need to get another ram and you'll be sorted
 
That is a problem, getting rid of corsair DDR400 is a shame.

btw, I wouldn't mind buying that ram from you if you are going to sell it when you get your new pc.

You could just try to get by on 512mb of DDRII, but then you are forcing yourself to use 2 sticks to make 1GB, if you then want to upgrade you would have to fill all of your slots, and its more expensive to buy 2/4 X 512 anyway.

What if I get an Intel Dual Core CPU. Do you get boards that take that ram with this CPU?
 
unless you want to play games imediatly, an option would be to maybe get something with on board graphics, liek the Nvidia 6150 or Intel G965 (if you're going the intel route) and just poping in a midrange DX10 graphics card when they're availible and you can afford one.

oh and what graphics card do you have ATM?

I think you should hang on till March next year, when you get that 'cash injection' & then buy the whole works.

PC hardware prices come down every month and by March next year, there will already be a truck load full of exciting new products for 2007, that works with Vista + certified drivers for it...

Just my R0.02... :)

Well if you can then I could save R1000 on the ram. The Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 CPU will cost R500 more(pcint.co.za). That will save me R500 then in March I'll upgrade the ram. Does that make sense.

Yeah but then I'm stuck for two more months. I've put up with my current P.C for months now and I've had enough of it :mad:

might be a good idea, the conroe refresh is coming Q2, and the E6300 and E6400 will be replaced with the E6320 and E6420 which will have 4MB cache instead of just 2MB and the price of the E6600 and E6700 is also coming down then.

wait wait wait, ngaged55, are you seriouse about those new "e6320 ans e6420"? and will they be the same price? will they over clock the same? my lord thats awesome tho,

yep ;)

AND there's gonna be an E4300 and E4400 at 1.8 and 2Ghz respectively, 2MB cache, and a 800Mhz FSB. Should be great overclocking chips, especially because of the lower FSB.

holy, have seen the e6320 and e6420 actualy will be cheaper, even tho they getting more core cache, which was 2mb will be 4mb, so boys and girls that means if say i over clock my e6320 to say 2.9ghz it will beat the extreme edition 6800, why you ask, well because the fsb will go up, it means you'll make the ram run a little more thus there's more bandwith and there ya go, a faster cpu, and best of all, for those new 8800gtx'x to start showing there true power, you need to overclock a e6600 to 3.0ghz, that ment you need to oveclock the e6300 to 3.4ghz because of its lower cache. this is very good news for those of use who like overclocking, but also like stabilaty, lets just hope these new cores do overclock nicely, but im gonna be smileying because mobo prices will have also come down, and possibly ram to.
