Buying a UPS

Bought a RCT 1000VA Line Interactive UPS.

Says it comes with free monitoring software - anyone know where could I download it from?

That's 8mm cable. Good luck with that...

1) I highly doubt you'll even manage to get that into a plug,
2) You will overload the wires, easily. Your house is fed with at least 16mm cable,
3) What you are doing, is illegal in terms of SANS 10142,
4) Should you start an electrical fire (and you will), your insurance company will simply laugh at you and your claim.

If your brother, who is an "electrician," told you to do this... I'm sorry to say, but he does not deserve to be called an electrician. Anyways, good luck! Send us some photos of your UPS after it blew up, that's now, if it doesn't burst out in flames first...

Savage do you mind if I pm you.Would like to ask you a few questions about 12v inverters, brain is fried  reading about all this stuff

@CB40 rather keep the discussion public. :p

Don't know what I'm talking about but here we go.I was offered a 900w-12v inverter c/w 30amp charger with a transfer time of <10ms,no batteries or battery box for R1,180.00 today. The batteries go for about R1750.00 each. This is from a very reputable company.I would like to get two of these units with 4 batteries to run the following during load shedding(Not all at the same time). Will it work. Was very close to buying a generator today until one of their workshop managers suggested the above.

1.Dell Core i7 laptop 17" screen
2.LG 42" LCD TV
3.Samsung 32" LCD TV
4.Sony 32" LCD TV
3.Acer Desk Top Core i3 with 17" LCD screen
4.Netgear router
5.Some 4w LED lights. Have 30 in total in the townhouse.
6.2 x 4' Double Tube fluorescent lights outside for security(will change the tubes to LEDs)They are on day/night switches and burn all night.
All the TV's are never on at the same time and not all the lights either. Forgot to mention the HD PVR Decoder and the smaller one for extra view

Lots of guys are gonna be fried, burnt, or dead. I'm all for cleaning up the gene pool, but not at the expense of your family.

So I've run my current setup for just over 2hours and I've only used about 15% running the following

32" LCD
Amazon fire tv
Billion modem
5.1 surround sound system
Charging my laptop and phone
Kitchen light and room light is on

Load is between 15%-20%

:D

I left the earth leakage on and my lights worked.
Guess I would have not replied now if I was dead

Just a quick reply now that I've got power again and the dinner is ready and waiting...

Nothing there that I can see that should have significant load. Inverters, generally, will automatically shut off in the event of a overload, and generally, they can take a bit more than their max rating. 900W, or 1800W in total is a bit small IMHO, and generally I would advise to rather get one adequately spec'ed system instead of two. Remember, the only way you can run two inverters is to run them -completely- seperated / parallell systems. It will add massive complexities to the wiring keeping track of all the separate lives / neutrals. Your inverter will more than likely be your most important piece of equipment in the system. Don't skimp on it, and rather over spec than under spec.

Just a word of advice... Fluorescent tubes on for a long period of time isn't a good thing. You'll burn the unit's transformer out much quicker than normal. Granted, they're not expensive and easy to replace, but just a FYI. They're not designed to operate for long continues periods.

He'll no, you ain't gonna run those stuff on a 900w inverter.

You need at least a 3kv pure sine inverter on 48v (4x 102ah batteries). That should suffice for your needs for at least 3 hours

Has anybody tried running their ups off the mains and experienced any problems.

I am running my ups with 2x 100 ah batteries on the power socket and powering my house.
No issues thus far and very safe to use

its safe if the mains are off? yes it is safe, unless u have serious electrical issues :D

Just what I thought.

Mains is off and earth leakage on for my lights to go on.

I switch the mains on ONLY when I unplug the ups plug from the power socket.
