Hello

Not sure whether this is the right place to ask, but here goes!

I'm a GR12 scholar in homeschooling, with IMPAK Education, previously known as Impak/Delta Education. Anyway, there is an app in the Play Store I'd like to buy for my tablet, to help me with Science. The app is by THIX, and is called Chemist. It makes it very easy to do any sort of chemical reaction, safe in the knowledge that I won't physically blow anything up or hurt myself. I am however, a bit stuck. I have no idea how to buy it. We don't have any credit cards, only debit cards. This being South Africa, is it actually possible to buy anything on Play Store with a debit card? I have a Capitec Global One debit card, and it has the MasterCard logo, so I was wondering if it would work? Is there anyone who have tried this?

Also, is carrier billing possible in SA on Play Store? I have a Windows Phone 8 device, and I have successfully bought apps with VodaCom in the Store. Is the same possible with Play Store?

I would appreciate any help on this matter.

Kind Regards
Neels Claasen

I'm not sure if they accept Debit cards In theory it should work if it doesn't work you can try this - Go to Dischem ask them for one of those prepaid credit cards (think they cost like R5) - load them with how much you need and use that to pay for your play store purchase.

As for Carrier billing not on play store for South africa sorry :(
I know it sucks, i used to use extra airtime on my old Nokia for this odd Play store doesn't support it

You should be able to buy it using your debit card. As long as it has a card number, expiry date and CVV number, Google Wallet should accept the transaction. Your bank might call you to authorise the transaction, as it will be from a foreign vendor.

Should the card not be accepted you can use the VCPay app to create a virtual credit card, and EFT money into it - done it many times

A Debit Card that has bezelled/indented number print with 16 digits and a CVV and expiry will work exactly like a credit card.

A "Maestro" type perfectly flat card could possibly maybe work, but probably not.

That app sounds awesome, do your folks not have a CC you could use and pay them back? (or not :D )

+1... Non-embossed cards cannot be used online most of the time.

Thank you herbertk, isie, Maverick Jester, PsyWulf and SauRoNZA! I will first try buying it with my debit card, and if that doesn't work I'll go buy one of those prepaid credit cards. Mind you, I think I'll go buy one of them anyway, it sounds like a much easier way to buy apps! Because my default SIM is Cell C, I have to switch to the VodaCom one everytime I want to buy something and I don't always have airtime on it. Though I think the VCPay app would also be worth a look.

Thanks for all the prompt and helpful answers!

Thank you for the very detailed answer.

Yeah the Play Store info says MasterCard would work, but I wasn't sure. At my age, I don't especially look forward to just throwing away R50. Hence I'm making very sure. :)
