Buying Windows 10 Pro for R400

Windows 10 is a great operating system for almost any PC – whether it is a gaming, professional, or home machine.

The good performance and wide range of supported hardware and software comes at a price, however, and the top-of-the-range version – Windows 10 Pro – is priced at over R3,000 for a retail version.
 
i legitimised my windows when i think it was windows 7 was for free or a ridiculously low price.

really should have got more than one licence

Should have included that question when asking microsoft about the R400 "oem" keys.

Of course the MyJournalist stopped short of vol, edu and msdn *rolleyes*
 
Or simply forego buying any key. Windows 10 works without a key. Sure, you lose some personalization features and have to live with the watermark, but that is about it, I think?

Then you might as well just activate it that "other" way, takes about 10 seconds.

back to this. win7 was free at some point wasn't it?
 
Just buy an OEM key off ebay from the UK, they are legally allowed to resell dead motherboards with the OEM keys. You can pay for the shipping of the motherboard or just ignore it like everyone and enjoy your cheap as chips legal OEM key.
You'll need to fresh install sometimes, but 90% of the time windows 10 fixes ( i know right, what sorcery is this) itself regarding activation of an OEM key on a retail installation

Silently tolerate pirating is for those who do not have moral restrictions.
Silently offload cheap keys is for all others.

It happens on earth as long there are more Windows computers for MS 'Telemetry' or bitcoin mining.
 
My Win 10 was free. Got donated old PC with Win 7 installed. Used the key on chassis to install Windows 10 :sneaky:
 
I recently grabbed 2 Win 10 Pro retail keys from a Carbonite reseller for R300 each. I wanted to get my home PC's (more) legitimate and get rid of possibly dodgy "loader" software. Unfortunately the R6k+ this would have cost going the official route is too much for my current budget. It's probably time for me to revisit the state of Netflix and Steam games under Linux and move back to penguin power, but that in itself is a time consuming exercise.

OT:

When's the last time you tried?
I installed MX-18 a few weeks ago...everything worked right out of the box, with little to no effort. Seriously, it was such a pleasure to install. (Not even the latest Ubuntu installed this easily -and that's a pretty darn easy install to begin with. And I know, because I did and then decided to try MX-18 instead when flash decided not to play nice on some websites ;) )

Yes, you can still upgrade free from the existing installation of Win7/8 and you don't need to enter any license key. Skip this part. Actually entering a key would be a wrong (wasteful) idea. It activates automatically based on a digital certificate created during the upgrade.

Important: use a right disk image for the upgrade: Home versions only upgrade to Home, Pro/Ultimate to Pro. 32/64-bit version is up to your choice.

If you prefer to start with a clean installation first time (bypassing upgrade process), then in a case fo Win7 a key is needed, but rememer that only retail keys work that way (not OEM COA sticker keys attached to a computer case). For Windows 7 OEM computers (most cases) I do run a program gatherosstate.exe from Win10 ISO image which generate a digital upgrade certificate, then do a clean installation without entering any keys. Google for details.

When you upgrade from OEM Win8 computer (like HP,Dell, Lenovo), it is very simple. Do just a clean installation - once again - without entering any key. Win10 (v1709 or later) will pickup a right license burned in the BIOS.

Also remember that some OEM Win8/10 computers have downgradable rights burned in the BIOS. It means that if you are not happy wih Win10 (which came with computer), you can install older version, like Win7. To do so, you have to use OEM Win7 disk provided by the manufacterer. If you are clever, you can also install from a retail OS image available for download (once again without entering any keys), but after installation you have to follow a procedure how to insert OEM certificate.
