bwana's new camera

Bwana are you currently using a 40 or 400's?
If you have a 40D to offload, when you get the beast I am interested.

I'm still working with 400Ds - hence the somewhat urgent need to upgrade. :o

On the plus side they've both paid for themselves countless times over. :)

@Bwana

Reading the thread, I'm confused...

You need a new camera because you want to shoot at ISO 1600+.
You like having some crop factor.
You want to shoot sports.

Aren't you approaching this from the wrong direction? You only want to shoot at 1600+ because your lens isn't fast enough. A new camera shooting at F5.6 at ISO 1600, will give you the same exposure as your current camera shooting at ISO 400 at F2.8 (with the same shutter speed).

Rather than invest so much on a new body (which is at best a medium term investment), isn't it better to invest in a faster lens?

Just my 2 cents...

I use a 400mm F2.8 myself and it's amazing, combine it with the 1D MKIII and well hehe :D The autofocus is instant, if I set the sensitivity of the tracking to it's most sensative I just need to keep my focus point on the target :D It's extremely heavy however but there is one bonus to it, if security give you any hassles... just point at the big white thing your holding and they wave you past :D

I was lucky, I got my 400mm just before the big price increases last year.

On the topic of video, the 5D's Video in 1080p is AWESOME, I have the ability to use my fast glass on a full frame which gives me a very nice looking image. Much better than my Canon HF11 HD camcorder.

:DIt's nearly $7000 now. :o

Still worth every penny! :D

It's weird, I got used to the 85 F1.2, I mean it produces stunning images but it's now just another lens to me.

The 400.... well... I turn into a little giggling schoolgirl everytime I unleash the big white beast! :D

Let me set the scene.... music from 2001 a space oddesy playing... I open the cases clips..... tild open the lid DAN DAAAAANNNNNNNNN DAAAN DAAAAAAAAN DAN DAAAAAAAANNNNNNN!! or something like that :D

EDIT - Ps. It's fun being an idiot :p

:) Baby steps for me. New body then honking great big lens . . . eventually. :)

I'll take the 85mm f/1.2 rather. Given that I've been known to shoot portraits at 10mm, 85mm is some serious telephoto for me :D

Damn - I'm going to need a new fast(er) 50mm arent I.

Look, I'm not saying it's bad. It certainly isn't. But it's not great and it's not as good as the system in the 40D, which they could easily have used.
I know m8, let it go bru! :D
I merely questioned a few things and ended up with agreeing with your rational.
I knew enough about the 5D to know that I would never consider it myself.

You gonna love the 1D :) There is a huge difference using a 1D to say a 5D/20D/40D/400D. I switched from a 20D myself, and that was a great camera.

A lens you might want to have a look at is the 100-400 L series, it's a very nice lens and if memory serves it's around R14k. Added bonus of not being stuck with only 400mm.... and yes it can get annoying

Heheh, yeah, the pastic fantastic will look pretty comical on such a big body. Then again, I held the 50mm f/1.4 yesterday - it's hardly bigger. You need the 50mm f/1.0 to balance the 1DmkIII...
