Hi All

I am in the market for a turbo diesel car and have narrowed it down to the following: 2012 Merc C200 CDI with 44000km and a 2013 Audi A4 2.0 TDI Multitronic with 55000km. Can anyone please give me their opinion on the pros and cons of the 2?

I know it’s not on your list, but the BMW E90 or F30 320d is better than both of those. Engine is extremely reliable and a lot more punchy. Good interior, gearbox and styling.

If I had to pick one of your two options, I’d probably pick the Audi because the merc auto box is pretty horrid.

Do you really need a Diesel ?
Diesels cost more to service/Repair than the Petrol equivalent.

Different story if those are the only ones available.

What's the budget?

Looking at the same vehicles, just newer models. Circumstances changed and I need to replace the Chev Utility I just bought.

The budget is around R 250k and I have become lazy so want an auto with a bit of luxury.

Is it true that an Audi is more nose heavy around the corner than a Merc or BMW ?

I owned a BMW straight 6 and I have to say that car was perfectly well balanced.

Yes, because the engine sit more to the front of the car and the Audi A4 is also FWD, where the BMW and Merc is RWD.

Thought they were rear wheel drive like the others.
So if the engine sit further front and its going to be a diesel which means a heavier engine than a petrol version - that car must handle terrible esp if it doesn't come with Quattro.

Not really, they might not handle like a BMW but they are far from being terrible, some of those have a longitudinal engine layout even though they are FWD, therefore the weight distribution of the engine is better compared to the transverse layout, No mismatched drive shaft issues, the only difference is that power is on the front wheel not the rear.

The new A4 also has a straight engine layout and it is used on both the FWD and the Quattro.

Wow this is very interesting - thank you for that information

So I'm +1ing this , Heard many people say good things about BMW's diesel engines.

Secondly the BMW will be the newer gen.

Thanks for the solid advice! Going to look at a 320d today. 2013 with 75k on the clock. Should be ok for a few more years if I look after it. Will keep you posted.

I owned a 320d F30 2013 model. Best car I have owned. The performance and fuel consumption is second to none. Averaged 5.6-6.2l/100kms - had the power I needed when I needed. Motor plan on the BMW is great too.

My SO owns a 2.0l TDI multitronic (auto gearbox) 2013 model. It's a reliable car. We havent had issues but the BMW was way more fun to drive. The fuel consumption wasn't as good as the BMW though but not bad - around 8l/100kms.

The BMW is a fun drive BUT it is a harder drive. You feel the road underneath you. It's not a bad drive and I enjoyed the feeling.

Had many bad experiences from the dealerships of BMW though. Best was the Sandton one on Rivonia - would recommend them but all the others were shocking.

Happy driving.

Many, many years.I sold my manual 2005 E90 320d with 385 000km's eventually without ever opening the engine ever, only normal maintenance and the clutch was beginning to shudder at that mileage but no others issues ever.

BMW diesel engines (from e90 onwards) are bulletproof.
