Cable theft cost Telkom millions

Stealing from telkom

So they steal from Telkom. mmmmmmm
Just like Telkom steals from us
:D
Wel Telkom julle het hulle so geleer

See... the way I see it is this... Telscum just need to upgraded their whole network to fibre, all the way to the home.. then eventually these cablethieves will just go away and steal from somewhere else...

Um im sure people can still steal fiber.. Mite not be as easy as taking it to a scrap yard.. but its worth something

I am sure their profit is more than enough to cover the theft 10 times over.

Are telkom now going to increase the cost of calls and data?

Telkom has also tried to create a system for estimating the loss of revenue it suffered as a result of cable theft, and has arrived at a figure of R368.1m. The total estimated loss from cable theft is thus about R569m.

Strange that was their bonus to top dogs in 2007 R365m - R580m

Back in the mid '90's Telcoms cable manufacturer ATC used a Kevlar core in their fibre cables. Telkom assumed that because there was no copper in the cable it would not get stolen. Well thieves started stealing the stuff to make bullet-proof vests and some was sold on to other countries in Africa.

Sad that service levels and product pricing are affected by cable theft, especially the rural guys.

I wonder what the average downtime was for these thefts? About a day or so, per break?

They lost at least R368m of revenue on cables that cost R201m to replace. So they make about R1.80 revenue off a every R1 worth of cable? Per day?? And that R1 is a once off cost if it gets stolen once per year. ;)

Excuse any incorrect calculations or flawed thinking (it's been a tough week) - but that's some healthy profits.

doesn't matter toxicBunny. Even if it is a month. It means that Telkom recover the total cost of the cable twice in one month........................................... WTF?

How can a company be allowed to abuse a country with such outrageous profit margains?

My phones and internet have been down for a 2 weeks. I eventually got hold of someone who actually knew something at Telkom, and the real problem was, that the main trunk cable was stolen, which was replaced, the same night it was replaces, it was stolen again, again, they replaced it, the same night, the cable was stolen again... This has went on for 3 or 4 times. Now telkom are sitting with a problem as to whether to replace the cable because it just seems to get stolen. And this is just in the space of 2 weeks!!!

The cable/s were stolen in my area for the 23 rd time!. According to Telkom the expected time to replace the cables is 3 weeks!.

Is there a Telkom representative on MY ADSL that can perhaps give us some feed back ?

It is easier to find the people who are buying the stolen cables than the ones stealing them (thieves are always running & hiding ).

Start from the list of scrap copper exporters.....

Make it law you need a license to sell copper to scrap dealers; a hefty license fee.
