Johannesburg - The Gautrain service between Pretoria, Hatfield and Centurion was disrupted on Wednesday morning due to cable theft, according to a statement on the Gautrain website.

The disruption was caused by cable theft at a substation and was expected to be repaired by 10:00.

According to the operator, a bus service between Hatfield, Pretoria and Centurion was running as an interim measure. This would double the frequency of the service from 12 minutes to 24 minutes.

"The Gautrain sincerely apologises to its commuters for this inconvenience," the statement said.

Murphy. :o I wanted to take the train this morning to avoid the mess on the R24.

Well as much as this isn't really a surprise, its somewhat refreshing to see the Gautrain ppl setting up a bus service as an interim measure whilst the cable gets replaced.

bus driver strikes, cable thefts, etc.

Me thinks this Gautrain thingy is gonna be a dead duck.

I do not think it is going to be a Dead duck. I think that maybe if they steal the cables enough the government may step up and make it illegal to trade with copper( like gold )

Lets hold thumbs.. cause my breath is not long enough.

Given the high prevalence of cable theft, surely some sort of backup plan (apart from buses) should be in place?

And put each and every scrapyard out of business, including legitimate ones? The theft will continue for as long as copper is sought after, regardless of what legislation the government pass. We need to end our reliance on copper...

If you do legitimate business you would surley apply to deal in this?

I do see your point. The chances of that happening?

It is time that copper theft is taken more seriously - Yes, crack down on the scrap dealers and enforce legislation to register every copper deal done. Surely if it is harder to sell illegally obtained copper, there will be less theft.

Telkom and Eskom has been to parliament with this.
Guavament say too many people will be with our an income.
So they rather turn a blind eye to criminals.

How about a Gautrain controlled by wireless remote running on magnetic tracks powered by nuclear energy.

Single point of failure. Building more highways would have been the better plan.

Only a section of the route was affected.
And according to a spokesperson they have thwarted previous attempts just this attempt succeeded.

You still need batteries elsewhere:o
Are you suggesting the government is refusing to fight copper theft so that criminals can continue to benefit?
