Couldn't Telkom change the colour of the outer covering of the fibre cable to say, something like a blue, or darkish blue? That way, theives will eventually catch on and be able to distinguish between copper and fibre. Then ultimately, Telkom can replace their copper lines with the new colour fibre, and not have some twit trying to steal it thinking its copper
Kevlar - the stuff that can be used to make bullet proof vests.
A friend told me they have found some ex-fibre optic in many taxi doors..

Genius!!! the Beast could actually tie posters to the poles with diagrams explaining which cable is the one the thieves should take...

It's a very good idea, but I expect it won't work on the colour-blind cable thieves...maybe Telkodemonopolies et al should paint snake-like stripes on the fibre optic cabling...Genius!!! the Beast could actually tie posters to the poles with diagrams explaining which cable is the one the thieves should take...

I expect the snakes would die - either due to a lack of food of an edible size, or due to flooding, or due to the presence & buildup of CO, CO2, CH4, etc.Why not just put snakes in the pit. Get management to do some repair - they are of similar species (at least behavour is)
IIRC there was a news article a while back about 2 clip-on fraudsters that died in a manhole due to a lack of O2 or concentration of other gasses - my memory is a bit fuzzy as to exactly what it was, but it was gas-related.
Also, snakes tend to prefer warm conditions - not sure how warm it is down there, and would they not creep out at night and then never return to the underground copper & fibre optic cabling conduits?
I don't think it's feasible to put live snakes down there.
Recycle old motor oil and pump it into the plastic conduit that surrounds the fibre optic & copper cabling - might make it more slippery to deal with than the cable thieves...Just thinking up a green solution

Color coding the cables will not work. They steal everything anyway.
Same case as i break into your car to steal your radio. You have a radio that has a removable face plate, that you have taken with you. I stick a screw driver through the radio so that me nor you can use it - vindictive.
A neighbour of mine is regularly called out all hours of the night to attend the scene of cable theft. Now this is a top manager and not just a techi. They take cable theft very seriously, but there is more syndicates than they can ever hope to break.

now thats the truth, when it's bolted down it just takes longer to steal and yes, they will steal the bolts too
