Cable theft to blame for ADSL problems

Huge (and growing) threat to viability of technology projects in SA. Good people are trying to put systems in place to benefit all but behind their backs others are stealing copper and damaging fibre. And it seems no-one is able to stop this.

my girlfriend dumped me yesterday
its also bcuz of cable theft......

these people steal the cable and sometimes it's not copper they get

Cable theft remains one of the main advantages of wireless technologies in Africa. As Tns mentioned the thieves often discover too late that it is in fact fiber and not copper. Not an easy problem to solve either...

If copper was completely replaced by fiber we wouldn't have this problem ;)

Apparantly in some country, cable theives demand telecom companies to install copper cable rather than fibre and other alternatives, or they will burn down telecom sub-stations/box/base stations.etc........

the fibre-optic cables were all stolen to make funky Christmas trees for tourists :D

(remember way back when scooby-doo wire was the in-thing at the time)

i'm not saying that they don't steal cable, it's just that there might be other causes other than theft and they use that as the easy way out.

I wonder what the next excuse will be, to carry on with such crappy service.

And that's when Telkom can charge me extra and install video cameras/armed response at all their sub stations. The cable thefts are screwing things up for everyone rich and poor by screwing with telecoms. We need more investment to create jobs...

Those here joking about the problem of copper cable theft obviously aren't exposed to the impact of it. Once you manage a large network of equipment relient on power - supplied over copper - you'll stop joking about it. For some of us it's become a flippen nightmare. Communications can be run on alternatives, but electricity is still relient on copper, and without power stuff just don't work.

When I talk of cable theft I refer to electrical cable theft - not so much communications. Copper power supply networks are prime targets as it contains a huge amount of copper. I've recently lost 1.5 km's of electrical cable in one night through theft.

rpm, they steal it for the Kevlar.

It wasn't cable theft, it was the unexpected increase in the user base
It wasn't cable theft, it was a bolt in the router
It wasn't cable theft, it was due to apartheid
It wasn't cable theft, it was not BEE
