Cosatu is urging all businesses to close at 1pm on Friday afternoon for the opening of the World Cup.

The opening ceremony at Soccer City in Johannesburg was scheduled to start at 2pm.

But, the Cape Chamber of Commerce and Industry said while most companies would be more flexible for the event, it would not be practical for all sectors to close shop at that time.

Provincial Cosatu spokesman Tony Ehrenreich said they were hoping to meet with the Cape Chamber of Commerce and Industry on Tuesday to discuss the proposal. The union would also discuss ways of making up for lost hours.

"We want to encourage as many employers as possible to do this, in both the private and public sectors.

"The World Cup is about building national unity, and R63 billion of South African funds were spent on this, so every South African should be able to enjoy it. It's a small price to pay."

Our business is closing at 2:30 pm on Friday. A lot of our suppliers are closing at 2 pm.
 
Lucky you we have to play games like in pre school and be happy not to be fired
 
We finish at 2pm every Friday. And on this one we have "activities" from 12pm meaning no work from 12 to 2.
 
While I fully believe everybody should be supporting Bafana, I dont think its fair to ask companies to close just to watch the match. The government and Fifa should have thought about scheduling this game for later in the evening earlier. Its too late now.

If we say its cool to go home for this game, are we also going to say people should go home early on Tuesday 22 June when SA plays France at 16h00?
 
Some guy said on the radio yesterday that those who aren't into the football should stay and work while the rest go off early:)
 
Officially we can allow our staff to leave at 13h00 on Friday and 14h00 on Tuesday.
