I am interested to know how many people are using or have used/experienced the Slipstream HSDPA modem? I am interested in buying one and have been told various different opinions about the huawei e220/2e272 and the slipstream. So I think the best way to decide is get as wide-spread opinion as possible from the "people-in-the-know"

The slipstream is way better than the E220. It's internal antenna is better, and will connect at better speeds when the signal is not great. It also has a coonnector for an external antenna if needed. It's software is also better than that which comes with the E220. I haven't used a E272.

Bad news is that Vodacom refuse to sell the slipstreams any more, but they are available from other suppliers.

thanks for the info,
I know the slipstream is not avail from VC anymore but I contacted Thetalogix's reseller already and they told me the price is about R2000excl depending on the internal memory size.

I would prefer to buy it from VC though because I have to buy a data contract anyway, and don't really want to buy a modem cash, seperately.

R2179.99 incl VAT according to the quote I got. Discount if you're buying them by the bucket.

You don't have to buy a data contract. Pre-paid is very much a viable option if you can afford to buy the device upfront. Check the R13000 bill thread as an example of how things can go wrong on contract.

If you must go contract you could sell whatever you get to make up for the Slipstream. BTW. What is the warrantee on the slipstream when buying direct? VC give you 2 years on whatever you get from them.

I'm using the E270. The only difference between it and the E272 is that the E272 has a connector for an external antenna. So far I'm pretty happy with it. The only downside is that it seems the signal strength in my area is on the low side. I haven't been able to get more than 2 bars (better than -85dBma) on signal strength. However it doesn't seem to affect my dl speeds that much, aside from the occasional timeout now and then.

I'd advise you to go the prepaid route, simply due to the fact that you definitely don't want to get a surprise of a huge bill at the end of month. Vodacom allows you to load multiple bundles during a month so, aside from getting the modem, there's no reason to go for a data contract.

Anyone know why VC stopped selling the slipstream?

I did ask, but no-one could give me an answer.

I do know that they were often out of stock, so my suspicison is that the supplier were unable to keep up with demand, which led Vodacom to pull the plug - looks bad for them to advertise something and then to turn customers away because they out of stock.
