Hi Guys

Did not know where to put this. I've been getting a funny beep beep notice when I make calls to certain numbers other people have also said that when they call me they hear a funny "beep beep" before the the call connects and rings. Does anyone else have this problem ?

iphone 3GS

My number did/does that if you're calling from a different operator than i am on [MTN]. The reason seems to be related to me having PORTED my number to MTN, but still having a Vodacom number [072xxx] , so aparantly this indicates to the caller that they will not be paying "Vodacom-Vodacom" tariffs but "Vodacom-MTN" . Kinda like a warning. Not sure if this has changed.

Thanks Diabolus, forgot to mention that I did port from MTN to Vodacom would explain things . God knows I did the wrong thing. Things we do for iPhones :p

It is a porting issue, I get the same thing when I phone from my iPhone too my wife's iPhone. She used to be on Cell-C, number ported and I am on Vodacom.

It is porting issue. Its not a IPhone issue. Whenever i try to phone a number which was ported will give that beep sound before it connets.

i have this issue on vodacom as well... irritating, actually has something to do with forwarding...

It's merely the network (phone independent) telling you, that you are calling a number that has ported, so that you are aware you may not be calling using on net rates.
We still see "082" as vodacom, etc..

Agreed, it's not an issue, just a notification.

My concern about this is health. The beep beep is very very loud and can be damaging to the ears in my view. I wish I knew who to raise this health concern with and who is responsible for this beep beep? ICASA? Vodacom? MTN?

The real question is, what lead you to a post from 2010/13?. But alas, today I actually learned something lol.

Hel nee, regig? How hard are you pressing the phone against your ear? I contend the problem is with you.

As others said, its a notice that the number is off-network. So if it looks like an 082 Vodacom number and it beep-beeps it means the call has been routed off of Vodacom's network. Due primarily to porting.
Its useful if for example you have free Vodacom-Vodacom calls so you call an 082 number thinking you can speak for 3 hours when in fact that number is now with MTN. The warning would let you know.

I am on Vodacom. I don't hear that beep-beep when I call Vodacom Numbers.
But I do hear it when I call MTN Numbers.

Resurrecting this thread as I found it through Google. The beeps are really loud and annoying and turning down the volume on the phone itself does not help. I have started to not put the phone next to my ear when I phone, as this seems to be the only solution.
