Hi,

Does anyone know roughly how much it would cost to insure 10k (SLR Camera, two lenses), for theft or accidental damage, both at home, on the road, and when overseas (overseas about once every two years for 2 or 3 weeks.).

Also, which insurance provider would you recommend? A dedicated Camera and Video equipment insurer or a regular insurer such as outsurance or dial direct?

Regards

I'd hate to know how much I'm paying specifically for my gear.

I've just insured my camera for 10K at about R80 a month. Covers all risk as long as if it's stolen out of the car it was in the boot etc.

I'm with Santam, I think you find most companies will only insure it if you have you house contents with them too.

So basically if some critter steals your camera bag that you left in your hotel room or anywhere else other than your car, you're in for a small car window replacement cost as well :)

Don't be an ass;)

If it was stolen out of my car they will only cover it if it was in the boot. It's the story of forced entry and temptation and all that. If it was stolen off the back seat and I was honest they wouldn't replace it.

Is it better to specify all of the camera equipment or just insure it as "Camera Equipment" ?

I wasn't given the option :/

They wanted the model and serial number before adding it onto the policy - so specified. The only option I had was commerical or private

When you specify the stuff. Do they want Invoices and stuff? Because I somehow lost my Invoice for my D3100 Kit

They asked for my serial numbers only.

When I insured my AV stuff, they wanted serial numbers and photos!

Okay.

Just updated by policy to include my camera and accessories as portable and all risk possessions to the value of R10'000.
Also added my new laptop for when I cover rugby at the stadiums. Value R12'000.
I also upped the value of my home contents by R35'000.

Overall Premium went up by R60/month.
Total cover for portable/all risk possesions are now at R70'000 and it sets me back R130.00/month.

I'm with Budget
