Out of interest, when people consider owning a Dslr do they look at anything aside from the top 2 brands?

They are very close. With this I was wondering how much brand loyalty the average person has, especially considering that most people do not have a mountain of lenses that they want to use on their next SLR.

As an example of this I have seen some local wedding photographers switching to the Fuji cameras.

I don't think it is necessarily about brand loyalty, but rather the cost of replacing everything seeing that photography equipment doesn't have a very high resale value

A poll would be interesting. The chart is the result of an international survey, but the local situation may be different. The local market is relatively small and therefore only supports a more limited range of brands.

I am caught up in the same dilemma. I have a rather "old" Nikon D50 which works brilliantly, but I want to upgrade. And all I seem to be looking at is either Nikon or Canon.

Come up with a qn and some options (max 10 iirc) and it shall be done. :)

The local market is flooded with Nikon and Canon budget bundles which suits the demographics and budget of the general S.A market very well, however this does tend to push the other brands aside.
This unfortunately leaves them with very little market space, or even availablity to the S.A market as a whole.
Naturally this limits the exposure we have to the other brands, which impacts the customer base.

WRT to other brands that depends on a little homework and the pro's and con's of owning something that has little to no support locally.
Sony has a fair representation locally, it has very decent full frame camera the Alpha SLTA99 in the same price range as the Canon 6D (20-25K body only) however lenses are not as easy to come by, nor as a big a range as the Canon.
If you are into macro work then Canon and Nikon both have very nice capabilities and some branded extension tubes specific to them.
Sports and action appear to be ruled by Canon with some amazingly fast telezoom lenses. (as i am sure Bwana can testify :) )
Landscapes, portrait, and wildlife, is open to Canon, Nikon, Sony and Pentax just depending on need, requirements and budget.

Based on the above responses, my suggestion would be for an ownership survey rather than a satisfaction survey. The comments are also related to interchangeable lens cameras, so maybe the survey should also be specific to this area. Finally it may be best to specify digital only to exclude all the old film cameras lying in cupboards.

What do you think of this for a first draft?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What brands of digital interchangeable lens cameras do you own? These can be either SLR or mirrorless types.

Nikon
Canon
Sony
Fujifilm
Pentax
Leica
Panasonic
Samsung
Olympus
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I was thinking a "what would you buy today…" sort of question might also be interesting?

Happy to run with it either way of course.

That would give better insight, and the comments would be really interesting. How about the question "What brand would you choose if you had to buy a new camera today?" and also add "other" to the list of brands.

First to vote ... :D

DSLR:
Canon for me. I have no reason to get Nikon or any other brand. I have a couple of lenses already for Canon and to replace it would be too expensive going for any other brand.

If I am a first time buyer, I would probably still end up with Canon after comparing Canon and Nikon. Albeit that my first SLR camera was a Pentax P30t (if memory serves me correctly), I think that I wouldn't even glance at that direction (same with Sony, Olympus and Fuji).

Besides - bwana says so...

Point-n-Shoot:
Almost anything goes. As long as it has decent zoom, MP, IQ (very important), is below R5k and a OEM underwater housing (at least 40m), it is good to go.

I'm really torn between Canon and Nikon. There's so little in it between the two of them for what I do it's making the decision harder than it probably should be.

And here I was thinking that you were the last of the die-hard-Canon-activists ...

I wouldn't swap brands now - it would be too costly an exercise - but if I was somehow starting over, knowing what I know now it's not cut and dry.

Let's face it - the only real negative thing about Nikon is the people that shoot it. They're the BMW drivers of the camera world… :p

Pentax SLR. I use a camera on a variety of technical equipment (mainly microscopes) via T-mount and 1.25 inch adapters. The facilities that Pentax built into their cameras for legacy lens support make them the easiest to use for this, especially when it comes to focus and exposure assistance. Overall the SLR captures better images than the dedicated Leica technical cameras that are normally fitted to this type of equipment, so this is a big requirement.

A spin-off advantage of good legacy lens support is that it actually does give support to legacy lenses that are really cheap. As an example, the last lens I bought was an as-new Zeiss 135mm F2.8 for R800. The lens before that was the second most expensive lens I have ever paid for – R1k for a 500mm.

When it comes to general photography, I was recently looking at cameras for the next purchase. I downloaded the RAW files for a number of cameras (Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Sony, Fuji) and processed them to get better insight into the image quality. The surprising thing was how similar the IQ actually is between brands. If a particular camera has a noticeable advantage in IQ in a specific aspect, it will usually have a disadvantage in another area. My personal conclusion was that it may be best to select a brand based on lenses rather than bodies.

BTW, I also have three Nikons courtesy of the specials at the annual Photo Expo (an AW100, V1 and J1). At this rate there will probably be a fourth one soon :)
