Out of interest, when people consider owning a Dslr do they look at anything aside from the top 2 brands?
The local market is flooded with Nikon and Canon budget bundles which suits the demographics and budget of the general S.A market very well, however this does tend to push the other brands aside.
This unfortunately leaves them with very little market space, or even availablity to the S.A market as a whole.
Naturally this limits the exposure we have to the other brands, which impacts the customer base.
WRT to other brands that depends on a little homework and the pro's and con's of owning something that has little to no support locally.
Sony has a fair representation locally, it has very decent full frame camera the Alpha SLTA99 in the same price range as the Canon 6D (20-25K body only) however lenses are not as easy to come by, nor as a big a range as the Canon.
If you are into macro work then Canon and Nikon both have very nice capabilities and some branded extension tubes specific to them.
Sports and action appear to be ruled by Canon with some amazingly fast telezoom lenses. (as i am sure Bwana can testify

)
Landscapes, portrait, and wildlife, is open to Canon, Nikon, Sony and Pentax just depending on need, requirements and budget.
