Cameras at the World Cup

They will stop you at the entrance if you have a DSLR? That's how I think it would be policed. I also heard the thing on the radio where they said you can't take DSLR cameras into the stadiums.

No no and no. Read the Fifa Code of Conduct for stadiums. It says nothing about DSLRs. You can take any photo camera in, but no video cameras.

Also stated from Roger (Canon product manager South Africa) that most DSLR's will not be allowed. He says you can try and get a normal DSLR with kit lens in but be prepared to walk back to car to
leave it behind.

No lenses with a metal body will be allowed. The best camera at this stage would be a good P&S or bridge camera with a 10 - 15x zoom.

I was replying to the suggestion that you may take your camera, but not take pics of players/the game. That would be impossible to police.

Good suggestion to take a printout of the policy, just for in case. I'm sticking to a P&S - just to be safe.

Strange that FIFA has yet to publish and regulations even close to these.
 
As stated, you can take any camera you want in. However, you are also not allowed 'bulky' items
l) unwieldy objects such as ladders, stools, (folding) chairs, boxes, paperboard containers, large bags, rucksacks, suitcases and sports bags. "Unwieldy" is given to mean all objects which are larger than 25cmx25cmx25cm and which cannot be stowed under the seat in the Stadium;

So dont plan on taking your 500mm zoom lens + tripod etc. My own DSLR bag is probably 30cmx10cmx10cm so I'll be taking mine with. And I dont have any fancy lenses that would label me as a 'pro' photographer. Thats all that Fifa really cares about. They dont want awesome photos being taken and then sold without them getting a slice of the pie

Also dont understand what that Roger guy is on about? :confused: Where did he get his info about, as it does not say anything about metal body cameras in the code of conduct

I wonder how the security guard is going to know what a "fancy" lens is. :confused: Probably best to take only one lens.
 
I wouldn't take a DSLR to the staduim, especially with a decent zoom on it - i got stopped aty the Warm up game between the Stormers and Boland - missed the game.

What exactly did you take with? I'll probably only take a 18-55mm lens, debating whether or not to take the 50-200mm as well. Its about the same size, so they shouldnt complain too much.
 
Was a trial run - so i don't think FIFA had its paws on yet but if they that anal at a wram up match - i suspect FIFA are going to be harsher, especially when you see the restrictions they even place on the media regarding broadcasting content, images etc from the staduim.

Unless the matches are in daylight and you're very close to the pitch I'd probably just take a P&S for some crowd shots and just sit back and enjoy the match.
 
Canon DSLR 18 - 55, I actually wanted to shoot the crowd for stock - not that i told them that.

And people wonder why some stadiums are reluctant to let people in with decent cameras. :o

Just out of curiosity how did you plan on getting releases from the people in the crowd?
 
The interesting part is this - if the security guard does not like you it wont matter what you bring. The trick is to ty and remain inconspicuous and slip through without them taking notice of you.

Huh? A P&S will have worse performance at night. Thats why I'm taking my DSLR with probably only the 18-55mm lens for general shots of the (orange) crowd. One guess what team I'll be watching :D

It will indeed but at least you wont be carrying around a bag of uselessness. :)
 
Where else am i supposed to shoot crowd stock? - i do it at Newlands Rugby all the time - and its not indivduals - general shots that mainly show action in the background and jumping crowds in the foreground.

I am fairly specific about what i release for sale to avoid issues around releases.

And people wonder why some stadiums are reluctant to let people in with decent cameras

Thats just a lame comment - not everytime i shoot i shoot for stock - alot of the time its more about shooting - if i get an image i am happy with it - i use it - are you any different. Didn't think so. Stop whinning :D
The restrictions are because FIFA are bascially Nazis about how coverage and content gets generated around there event - nothing more. nothing less.

Go read up on general media restrictions - the media in SA have been complaining becasue they are so anal.

You brought up shooting commercially not me and yes, I am doing things differently if that's the way you operate. ;)
