I have had fibre installed at our complex by Vumatel and in the initial and subsequent meetings, I was assured that we could put the cameras on the "internal network", but once everything was done, nobody knows who I can speak to. I refuse to pay R250 per month per camera to just put up a handful of cameras - even paid for a few CPE's for good measure, in case I do want to "internet-ify" the camera setup later.

Anybody had the same experience or know who I can speak to?

You cant use the CPE's for point to point connectivity within the complex in general, is this what you are referring to?

Hi,

Yes, I was led to believe that I could do that, but I am now also aware of this. I don't specifically mind, since I do think that making one of those points a break-out, would be an option.

Yeap that wont be an issue, internal Camera network linked to a CPE, but you will still need an ISP package obviously to get your breakout.

Cool, so the real problem is how to use their network that sits inside our complex, i.e. without re-laying our own fibre network for our cameras.

You can't that's what I am saying :), so did they run a CPE to each camera?

@Tommy - I am the cctv provider :) (.... and trustee....)

@PBCool - No, they didn't. I kept on asking them - from before the trenching, and always - "the next guys coming, definitely know - speak to them....).

... Otherwise, I will put R10k worth of Long Range AC Access Points in the complex to connect the cameras and give internet access to the residents (to offset the costs of the access points). Would be a pity, as Vuma would sell less fibre points....

Not sure how you would do that as you aren't allowed to aggregate on a single fibre line, if you negotiated a deal with Vumatel to do the internal camera fibre then you should have this in writing somewhere?

Totally depends on the provider, not sure on vumatel. technically it is simple, assign the cctv cpe's to their own private vlan, hardest part would be to trench a fibre drop to each camera, some providers allow this some do not

Sure but there aren't CPEs installed, you would also need to then subscribe to a line from Vumatel for each one to allocate the vlan.

Yip, and R250P/M per camera is not cheap making the option of rolling your own fibre (depending on distances/trenching) or wireless a possibility. However maintenance and upgrades of the internal network would not be the estates problem if they use Vuma which could be a plus.

@dieterlubbe - I am using Ubiquity Unifi 3MP POE IP cameras linked to a switch per building. Those switches were supposed to be linked together using our internal fibre network (with local IP addresses).
