British Prime Minister David Cameron on Monday said more needs to be done to help Muslim women learn English to tackle discrimination and gender segregation in their communities.

Writing in The Times newspaper, Cameron said it was time to confront the "backward attitudes" held by a minority of Muslim men who were exerting "damaging control" over the women in their lives.

Due to "'passive tolerance', people subscribe to the flawed idea of separate development", he said.

The Conservative leader launched a £20-million (R476,7m) language fund for women in isolated communities as part of a drive to build community integration.

And he said migrants would be forced to improve their fluency English or risk their ability to stay in Britain.

Cameron said new figures showed that some 190,000 Muslim women – or 22 percent – speak little or no English despite many having lived in Britain for decades.

Some 40,000 of these women speak no English at all, he added.

"So it's no surprise that 60 percent of women of a Pakistani or Bangladeshi heritage are economically inactive."

Cameron linked the issue to extremism, saying separate development helped prompt the search for something to belong to among second-generation immigrants.

He said Muslim women were reporting "an alarming picture of forced gender segregation, discrimination and social isolation from mainstream British life".

He said it was up to migrants to improve their English language skills if they wanted extend their stay in Britain or apply for citizenship.

"We will now say: if you don't improve your fluency, that could affect your ability to stay in the UK. This will help make it clear to those men who stop their partners from integrating that there are consequences."

So .... there it is .... put out or get out.

It is England after all, so I s'pose English is the lingua franca ......

Nicely done, Cameron

He's living in cloud cuckoo-land if be thinks it will make a jot of difference

The backward attitudes are held by every person who believes the quran.
Re education might be more productive.

The fact that England is being overrun by people who refuse to learn the language is a major issue. Same thing in every country the Muslims are slowly taking over - Germany is probably the best example.

At the end of my 5-year visa I have to do another year of ILR, and then write an English test (in English, about England) to get citizenship. He's admitted that there are people who have been here for decades that can't even speak the language! Round them up, get them to learn English and integrate, or ship them back where they came from. A huge number of them are a just a burden on society anyway.

The other side of that coin is that the Brits went and colonised a whole bunch of countries.
How many South african poms do you know who speak fluent Afrikaans, Xhosa or Zulu?
Me. But my knack for languages aside, I don't understand how they've gotten away with it for so long. Sure, someone fresh off the boat (dingy, life raft, etc) may take some time to learn the native language, but absolutely MUST at least make an attempt!

Because the Muslim way saw these woman never going out unless accompanied by an adult male relative and never allowed to speak to strangers. Not much chance of learning anything.

Cameron is not the brightest bulb in the chandelier.

Why just muslim women ?

Anyone who wants to live in England should be made to learn English or bugger off - men, women, muslims, non-muslims etc.

Because 190000 non-English speaking, unproductive Muslim women is a problem - in ANY country where Arabic isn't the official language. If their men at least allowed them to work, like other immigrant women (and there are probably millions here), then it wouldn't be an issue - they'd probably end up learning the language out of necessity. This isn't a nationality problem, however, it's an Islamic problem.

France has the exact same problems, some of these Banlieus look like slums and these idiots are getting free grants from the French government.

The problem is that they continue living like it's their home country. I would say that it's common sense that when you visit someone's home you respect it, YOU adapt to IT, but apparently common sense isn't so common where these people are from. It's not like Europe begged these people to come over.

That's just the sound bite, any legislation will apply to any and all people requiring immigration clearance to live in the UK

I assumed it was the standard already, tbh. One needs to do the "British Test" before citizenship is granted. But apparently it only applies to individuals from certain countries, if thousands (as Cameron has already admitted) have lived here for decades without even being able to speak the local language. How they managed to get here in the first place astounds me.

That's fine. As far as I'm concerned you don't speak English you don't get to live in England.

And you most definitely do not qualify for any benefits whatsoever.

I think the new follow up test after having lived in the UK for 2 years is the new bit.

He's not in a position to refuse European citizens.

Then there are all of those who got in illegally, by cheating the system. They busted loads of these places that issued these English competency tests that government relied on. Loads of people who can't speak English were given citizenship because according to their BOUGHT test results, they could. It would be nice if we could give the people who went through those programs those tests again, and if they fail then revoke their citizenships, because they attained them illegally.

I think they should severely cut funding for translators for public services. If you can't speak English then accomplishing things should feel like a pain in the arse, as an incentive. Only medical and law related services really need translators as a matter of urgency, and analysis has shown that translation services make it very easy for people to not have to learn English at all, at a huge cost to tax payers of course.

Yip and for me to renew my permanent residence here I have to prove that I have an acceptable level of French. These people are sometimes 2nd generation and cannot even speak basic French. The problem is that Europeans have been far to kind and they lost their balls, given that France has now shut down extreme mosques and cramped down on these people I see that Europe is slowly turning back. In Rome do what the romans do, or else go back home.
