Hi, just to quickly confirm.

I just sold my iPad on Gumtree

If I've received an SMS proof of payment from the buyers bank, as well as received an email from them with the proof of payment for their bank.

Is there anyway that I could still be getting scammed?

Yes. Phone and confirm the proof of payment or wait until cash is actually in your account. But even then, you need to confirm it was not done via a cheque deposit - and would need to phone the bank to confirm type of deposit.

The use of EFT for private sales is really not appropriate.

Yes there is.

check your bank account if the funds are available, instead of sitting in the "waiting to clear" section.

Friend of mine sold his PSP, they faxed him "proof" of payment etc, turns out the 3 slips you give the teller, they swapped the middle one of a cheque deposit, the middle one said "cash" so they fill it out and the bank stamps it without checking. The cheque is usually stolen. The funds appear in your bank account but not as cleared. They then send you proof of a "cash" payment (since the slip/bank stamp is there) etc

I suggest if you're with ABSA to be even MORE careful, since it happens with ABSA clients a lot. If the funds cleared and it's available, then I'd go ahead with the transaction.

The proof of payment was an emailed PDF, via the business Internet solution electronic banking system of FNB. Does that not mean anything? The guy is also emailing me a copy of his id..?

Do the confirmations have cApS syndrome or spelling or punctuation errors?

^^This.

Don't hand over the iPad until the money is available for you to withdraw.

You can verify FNB EFT payments on their website. Top right above the search bar on the FNB website.

So confused. Phoned FNB they confirmed the legitimacy of the payment. Guy sent me his ID. An African man with the name Gareth Smit. Seems legit but I can't be too certain.

If there is any doubt, wait until the funds are clear.

What you described is exactly how scammers operate.

If the situation were reversed, would you do what he did? Would you pay money into someone's bank account when you have never met the person, and never seen the iPad?

This sounds like a scam. Did FNB verify the transaction number as legitimate?

An SMS and proof of payment are easy to forge. I would wait for the money to land in your account, if the buyer can't wait then you know it was a sham.

Fnb did verify the validity of the transaction...

You can verify FNB EFT payments on their website. Top right above the search bar on the FNB website.

Assuming that you verified the transaction personally using the Verify Payment link on www.fnb.co.za ... then the only way for you to get 'scammed' is if the dude goes and reverses the transaction afterwards (not an easy feat). A www.fnb.co.za Verified Payment is as good as cash in my hands imo :D

I have successfully reversed an EFT through FNB, it cost me R250.00 and the money had not yet cleared.

I would personally not hand over anything until the money reflects in my account.
