I was wondering if I can be 'traced' by someone if I use a forum.

Say, for instance, I tell everyone here I am going do this and this to so and so............. and someone decides to stop me by finding me before I do a stupid thing

Is it possible to find my location by way of IP address or something like that?

I know it says Somerset West in my details, but can I be found in such away that the person trying to find me comes knocking at my front door?

Yes.

Would be hard for a normal citizen but for law enforcement agencies it would be easy once they have a court order.

The Forum administrator will be able to check your IP address, unless you are hiding behind a proxy for your http requests
If its a local IP SAIX IP address, then read this thread

Try http://openrbl.org/ to rack which network if not SAIX

They see which ISP the IP belongs to and the ISP checks what user is attached to that IP and you're nabbed...

You need a court order tho...

*** puts a big piece of tracing paper over the OP ***

Yes, you can be traced! We know where you live... step away from the keyboard!

what about 3G ? (Pay as you go)

Same, they will be able to obtain details from your mobile network even if its 3G, they can identify the specific SIM used and if it's contract SIM, all your details are revealed, even if it's prepaid they can still trace you like tracing a cellphone via signal triangulation, althought it's not that accurate but still workable.

That's why people use zombie machines/networks, multiple encrypted proxies to do illegal things.

with pay as you go, I imagine it would be almost impossible for them to trace you?

The normal procedure is to subpoena the isp's records and identify the account holder by the ip address and the time that the ip address was used. If the isp has you on record, they already have your personal details otherwise they can hand over the ip address and line port to Telkom who will be able to pull the account holder details from the given line port. The next thing you know, you got the cops at your door :)

IP Address + Time you were online is linked to an ISP who is charging you for that time online. The forum more than likely stores your IP address and the time the post was created.

If you are using ADSL, the ISP has a port number that can be traced back to the Telkom telephone account to get the physical address of where the ADSL service is provided. The ISP may also have your credit card details from when you paid for the bandwidth.

If you are using Cell based technology, then the ISP stores a port number of a different sort that the network operator can link to the device number of the device being used which can be triangulated and the phone number of the device itself can be checked for a physical address and name.

If you are using Neotel, they can trace you to a specific contract that was signed.

If you are using a HotSpot, then it's down to how you paid to access the hotspot.

If you are in a Internet Cafe, then it's down to how you paid to for your internet time there.

yes you can be traced,

no matter what ISP you are using, 99% of the time it will connect to a telkom`s network,if you are using a copper line, they can track you right down to your front door.

they can see what ISP you are using, how long you have been on line. what phone number you are using , and were the line is located

if you are using a 3G card, they can use the Usim number to trace you, they can pin point your location with in a meter.

multiple chained proxy connected through a international server that does not log IP footprint data, similar to what "scene release" groups use.
they not cheap and there's only a few servers in the world that offer this type of anonymous connection

on a side note: there's no way of hiding(IP)from the physical layer unless you own your own sattelite,,,:)

go watch the movie about Kevin Mitnick the hacker... that was the late 1980s... look how they tracked him down. This is 2009, they can track you down with a plastic spoon and a greasy KFC bucket.

Thanx for the info.

Thing is, I have tracked down a person on another forum that owes me a lot of $$$.

This person did me in a couple of years ago, and I stumbled upon a discussion that sounded familiar to me. Turns out to be this exact same fraudster.

Its just that no one knows where he lives.

But from this info I gather I can pay someone to find him through that forum.

The forum will only have his IP address which is useless to you. You will also need info from his ISP & Telkom (or Vodacome etc) in order to obtain more information. This information cannot be obtained without a court order.

Best bet is to open a case of fraud when something like this happens so a court order can be obtained for the police to get the relevant information.

The above however will not work for you as you have no evidence from the time the incident happened to you. You are now assuming it is the same person and you cannot obtain evidence based on that assumption.
