Can I connect this subwoofer

Do you have a make and model number for the sub?

I will check if I can find it when I return home this afternoon, but as far as I know it does not have much on it. It hase a big "ActiveBass" sign/logo on the front, and it says bridged amplifier or something along those lines somewhere at the front bottom of the sub.

I know this though, it is a fairly old item, maybe 10 years or more.
 
8Ohm + 22KiloOhm = 7.99 Ohm in parallel so your amp should not notice the difference.

As for the crossovers it should specify in the speakers specification or sometimes on the back. Modern amps have overload protection etc so its quite hard to fry them and the speakers are very likely to have crossovers to protect them. I would wire it all up and start at a low volume and try it if you hear any distortion from the fronts turn down the volume asap.

Thank you for your input. the Speakers are CAV floor speakers that I purchased recently, they seem pretty decent, but I don't know if they will have crossovers. I will see what I can find on the packaging.

so 8 Ohm > 22 khom ? I vaguely remember these things from a science class...but not much...

Kilo is 1000 so it is 22000 ohm and 8 ohm.
So the sub has a very high impedance aka resistance so very little current will flow through the sub and almost all of it will go through the front speakers.
The sub has whats called high level inputs and no rca input and has its own amplifier built in. A lot of active subs have both rca and high level inputs and some manufacturers actually recommend using the High levels as your sub and front speakers then receive the exact same signal.

sorry, that makes sense, I confused myself with ohm and kohms for a second. However, if my Amplifier/av receiver says I must use speakers between 6 and 16 ohm, would connecting the sub with the speakers that is 22khom not be an issue?

Because you are connecting them in parallel you have the following:
Two Parallel Resistors: Rt=(R1 x R2)/(R1 + R2)
Rt = (8x22000)/8+22000)
Rt = 7.99709 ohm

So your impedance only changes from 8 to 7.99709 ohm with both the front speaker and the sub woofer connected.
Don't worry too much you are not doing anything strange its a fairly common configuration.

Thanks very much. I will give it a shot this afternoon and see how it goes. If I can get the subwoofer working correctly, all I will have to purchase extra for now is a center speaker.
 
The load presented to the amp will be in the order of 2k at least and there will be an isolating capacitor in series with the input

REL subwoofers offer two types of connection

1 - High power inputs which are designed to connect to the speaker outputs of a power amplifier
2 - Low power outputs which are designed for a 100mV sub-woofer output from a pre-amp

The OP's subwoofer is type 1, so may safely be attached directly to the speaker out of the amp. If there is only one channel, use this. If there are connections for 2 channels, this means there is a centre-tap transformer at the input of the subwoofer

Either scenario will not present any noticable load to the amplifier
 
What you have is a passive subwoofer. Your amp requires an active subwoofer. Best to invest in the active one for best performance. If you add the passive one to your system, you might end up causing a strain on the front channel output.

This is incorrect. There is a power amplifier built into the unit

So just to confirm, I have speaker wire running from the AV receiver to the two front speakers, do I connect the subwoofer's cables to the speaker wire, then into the amp, or do I connect the subwoofers wire directly to each speaker, i.e connect the speaker wire to the amp, connect the subwoofer cables to the other ends, and into the speaker? The latter sounds incorrect?
 
The same as the diagram on the sub.

Go from the amp left front channel to the LF speaker then connect the subs one wire to the same left front channel on the amp.
Then do the same with the right front speaker and the other sub cable to the RF channel on the amp.
 
From AV receiver left channel out to left speaker, positive to positive, negative to negative. Then connect positive from one pair of cables on the sub to positive on that same speaker and negative from that same pair to negative on the same speaker.

Repeat for right channel.

Switch on and enjoy
 
I connected it up, and it sounds good. There seems to be no issues, apart from the bass being a bit high at times, when increasing the volume. I will play around with the settings to see what is best. Thanks again!
 
A final question, I have 2 telefunken speakers I will be using for the back, all I need is a center speaker. Any recommendations on which one would be best to purchase, low to mid range, not some high-end audiophiles kind of stuff that costs as much as my car?
