Hey all,

So I have been property hunting and I found a place I really like!

I spoke to them about ADSL line and they are not sure. They do have a phone line though (added an image... Sorry for bad quality).

Just wondering if there is any way that I can find out if an ADSL line can be installed to the flat?

The only way you can find out is by applying. Only after you apply, Telkom will see if there is space left on the exchange.

A coverage map only indicates that there is ADSL infrastructure in the area...it does not mean there is space available on the exchange.

This might lead to complications. As I have not signed the lease yet and only viewed the property today, is there now way for me to check if there's space on their exchange?

I could try by address, but I don't think that phone line is active right now.

Could they do it by address?

No, they cannot do it by address. This is unfortunately how Telkom does it. They do the ADSL application through separate departments. So if there is ADSL infrastructure, their system shows ADSL "Available". But in a very congested suburb, the exchange may be full with no ports available. This gets confirmed when the technician goes to the exchange itself to install your ADSL.

Even if the previous occupant had ADSL, it may have been allocated to another user after the occupant cancelled. An ISP will not apply for an ADSL line on your behalf unless you have a Telkom bill with your own name and address on it.

As an alternative solution to ADSL, via this link - http://www.telkom.co.za/today/unlimited-broadband/ - you can put in an exact address and it will provide you with the following type of info. :

You're one step closer. Confirm your address below, then complete your application to get the SmartBroadband Uncapped Wireless service.

It just depends on how many people have already taken up their wireless broadband in the area you're choosing to stay in. I think there's a very long thread to do with this, whereby people are getting speeds around 100Mbps.

EDIT: It's possibly a thread on Fibre I had seen

The area is not covered :(. There are satellite dishes in the area so I think the landlord may allow some type of WiSP service.

Guess I can also take a look into that?
